Came from humble beginnings, worked in manufacturing building tanning beds and did the GI Bill in early adulthood to pay for college. After that he became a teacher and a football coach (he was the DC), and his team won state in 1999. All while doing this he stayed in the Army reserves. He was the 1989 Nebraska Citizen-Soldier of the Year. He retired from it in 2005. In 2006 he ran against a 6 term incumbent republican named Gil Gutnecht, which is a fantastic name. He beat Gil and got reelected a few times, then on to governor for a couple terms. He met the Dalai Lama. He’s been an advocate for veteran’s. He’s pro-education. In 2008 he voted against govt bail outs, but in 2009 he voted for them. He owns no stocks or securities. I’ll be sure to let you know in future responses that math may be involved. Yes, he enlisted a few different times that totaled 26 years, but only served 24 of them. I’m sure if we combine forces we can figure out exactly how many times he enlisted/reenlisted and for how many years he signed up for each time. It will be an exciting adventure in math for us both. I get that him bailing 2 years shy of his commitment is the big talking point of the moment, but it was almost 20 years and 9 elections ago and the guy continued to serve his country since then. His actions clearly indicate he wanted to serve his country in other ways, and the people of Minnesota seemed to agree by continually reelecting him. I don’t know if we have any Minnesotan’s on the BB but l would be curious to know why this was an unimportant detail for 9 straight elections and why it suddenly now is.
