This is what happens when you elect the right man to run your state!

Here is the secret about states with no income tax. They burn you for far more with property taxes. My brother is in Colorado with an equal valued house, but when you compare the taxes we pay as to his combining his state income tax and far lower property tax, he wins hands down. And yeah, the balanced state budget is required by law no matter which party is in business in this state. And yes, there is also this piddling homestead credit and even a veteran's disability credit. But it still does not make up the difference in taxes we pay.

Yes, Texans actually pay more in taxes than Californians do (chron.com)

 Are you screwing around again?

I thought Texas had no state income tax.

Texas does not have an individual income tax. Texas does not have a corporate income tax but does levy a gross receipts tax. Texas has a 6.25 percent state sales tax rate, a max local sales tax rate of 2.00 percent, and an average combined state and local sales tax rate of 8.20 percent

Tex, get over here and straighten this out.

10 states with the highest personal income tax rates

A comparison of 2020 tax rates compiled by the Tax Foundation ranks California as the top taxer with a 12.3% rate, unless you make more than $1 million. Then, you have to pay 13.3% as the top rate. The additional tax on income earned above $1 million is the state's 1% mental health services tax.

The top 10 highest income tax states (or legal jurisdictions) for 2021 are:

  1. California 13.3%
  2. Hawaii 11%
  3. New Jersey 10.75%
  4. Oregon 9.9%
  5. Minnesota 9.85%
  6. District of Columbia 8.95%
  7. New York 8.82%
  8. Vermont 8.75%
  9. Iowa 8.53%
  10. Wisconsin 7.65%

Each of these states has a personal income tax floor, deductions, exemptions, credits, and varying definitions of taxable income that determine what a citizen actually pays.

10 states with the lowest personal income tax rates

Only seven states have no personal income tax:

  • Wyoming
  • Washington
  • Texas
  • South Dakota
  • Nevada
  • Florida
  • Alaska

Ok I see, thanks!

But while we are being reasonable we should keep in mind that the most important thing, much more than a few percentage points one way or the other or how you rearrange the different income streams the important factor is how efficiently that income is being used, or not. regardless of whether it's a conservative or a liberal tax take a good look at how much inefficiency and outright graft is involved and how much are the initial cash actually winds up in the coffers of whatever agency or project it's meant to bolster. For instance look at how much of any social welfare fund actually winds up in the hands of the poor and on the other side how much defense spending is waste red tape and overspending? At that point ask yourselves if anybody from either party has the balls to efficiently trim the fat from those budgets.
