Ibleedbrown
IIRC, San Francisco is THE most expensive US city for real estate. It can’t get any bigger because it’s locked in between Oakland, Berkeley, and water. And the weather is gorgeous and it’s a big tourism destination. I’m sure they’ve been hit hard by covid with a decrease in people traveling. Between the high cost of living and the tourism industry, l imagine it’s very beneficial for them to not let their homeless population get outta control. There’s a quantifiable correlation between desperate people and the crime rate, and understandably homeless folks can be pretty desperate. A fair amount of homeless have addiction problems too, which can raise a person’s level of desperation. The article doesn’t say how it got to the point where the city was putting its homeless in hotel rooms, but if l had to guess, it has something to do with tourism and the crime rate. My guess is that pre-covid they determined it was cheaper to do that than it was to pay overtime to police for a spiking crime rate that drives off tourists. There’s a few things that are unclear in the article, including the sub heading. The details about exactly how the city's homeless program remain unclear. Unclear indeed.
