Trust me as the Board's resident wino. I've been lucky enough to try some of those really high end bourbons. One of my friends has a 200+ bottle collection of the same. The difference between a $1,000 bottle of Pappy van Winkle and something way down on the price scale is miniscule- and 95% of bourbon connoisseurs couldn't tell the difference if you served it up to them side by side blind. It's the same deal with multimillionaire wine snobs. Stuff like that becomes "trophy" wines- or booze- to show off how much money you have. As I used to tell my wine class- just because it's 10 times more expensive doesn't make it 10 times better. The logarithmic law of diminishing returns. Depends... if you just want to make a very trendy Manhattan you want the high 95% rye Bullitt- and I highly recommend Antica Formula vermouth to go with it. Stuff like Martini and Rossi is garbage by comparison.. (BTW if you ever run across a bottle of Sazerac rye, don't hesitate- it's a collector's item, and mighty hard to find). Sipping on the rocks- look for 1792 Bourbon. That's just me, I really don't care for the stuff that has high afterburn. Those macho guys who pretend they enjoy cask strength 121 proof stuff straight are either alcoholics - or nuts.
