This picture was taken I believe it was September 1991.  I was one of the many manning the rails as the USS MIDWAY (CV-41) returned to a US port for the first time in 17 years.  She was on her way to San Diego, CA to be decommissioned.  We swapped with the USS INDEPENDENCE and returned to Yokosuka Japan.  We were manning the rails to honor the USS ARIZONA memorial pictured top right.

deeply moving, solemn, stunning long visit to the Arizona Memorial - if you ever make it to Hawaii, don't miss it.

This trip is on our list..

I haven't been to the Arizona memorial but I have been to Normandy.. That was the most powerful place on the planet we've visited.
