Within 90 minutes of the phone lines being open, one of the non-profits handling the incoming calls were said to have been called collectively 630,000 times. The NPO in question was the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles. Angelica Salas, the executive director of that NPO, anticipated high call volumes, just not that high: “We knew the number of applicants would be high, but we were just overwhelmed.” This particular stimulus for illegal immigrants is only slated to cater to 150,000 people. Keep in mind, there are an estimated 2 million illegal immigrants in California, so it’s just naïve to think that there wasn’t going to be a massive explosion in terms of incoming calls. When there’s a less than 1-in-10 chance that someone will get free money, but they can increase their odds by getting in line first, you’re going to have a lot of antsy hand-raisers moving quick.
