On a global scale the Coronavirus is really the “China coronavirus” – but within America’s borders, it’s the “New York Coronavirus.”

While liberals are busy shaming population-light Red States hardly impacted by the coronavirus for reopening “too quickly,” most (but not all) were happy to ignore how New York spawned the problem in the first place.

New York is the epicenter of the pandemic within America, at one point being home to nearly half of the nation’s cases. Cases are finally declining now, and it does look like they’re growing in the rest of the country, but that’s just due to increased testing. Daily positive coronavirus cases as a percentage of all tests are on the decline nationwide.

While Andrew Cuomo is at the helm statewide, the mayor of the city housing the majority of the state’s population delayed calls to begin shutting down his city for as long as possible.

NYC’s Mayor Bill de Blasio was eventually shamed into shutting down his city’s schools (among other measures) – but not before one final visit to the gym. Less than two weeks prior de Blasio defended not shutting down the city, which he saw as a move that would be caving to “undue fear.”

For a virus that spreads at an exponential rate, every day counts, and that has visibly been the case in NYC. According to a former CDC director, New York’s death toll would be up to 80% lower (or as “little” as 50% lower) had social distancing measures been enacted just two weeks prior (statewide – but especially in NYC).

And from there, the virus was exported to the rest of the country. Seldom did I ever think I’d find myself quoting the New York Times on this issue, but even their analysis concluded as much.

To quote from their report:

New York City’s coronavirus outbreak grew so large by early March that the city became the primary source of new infections in the United States, new research reveals, as thousands of infected people traveled from the city and seeded outbreaks around the country.

The research indicates that a wave of infections swept from New York City through much of the country before the city began setting social distancing limits to stop the growth. That helped to fuel outbreaks in Louisiana, Texas, Arizona and as far away as the West Coast.

“We now have enough data to feel pretty confident that New York was the primary gateway for the rest of the country,” said Nathan Grubaugh, an epidemiologist at the Yale School of Public Health.
