Rookie of the year

As much as I am a baker fan...saquon has really done a helluva job.

2000 rushing yards...3rd time for a rook in nfl

Caught more balls than obj his rookie season.

Baker may get it still as a more skill position

Its close

One correction. Saquon did NOT have 2,000 yards rushing, he had 2,000 COMBINED yards, rushing & receiving (see stats below). Impressive, but not nearly as impressive as Baker's numbers at the QB position. Our kid deserves Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Took Grandson to the airport a couple hours ago to fly him back to San Antonio & looked into the gift shop at Akron Canton Airport. Staring at me was THIS shirt......

My view on Baker.

That fateful Thursday night....playing the Jets with Tyrod as our starter....I (like the rest of us) was watching with my typical Browns long-face.  We looked awful.  I said to Mrs. Wife, "We're not gonna win a game all season."

AND THEN, Tyrod got hurt......and EVERYTHING changed.

When Baker took the snap in victory formation I turned my tv up to 39 volume (quite loud).  I wanted to be a part of that celebration.

From there, Baker Mayfield took an 0-16 football team to 7 wins and had us in the playoff hunt until the second last week of the season.  (might have made playoffs if they'd have jettisoned  Hue & Haley sooner)

So, if we're talking MVP.....well, what he did for an 0-16 football team seems to be the definition of most valuable player.

What the criteria for Rookie Of The Year is, I'm not sure.  But as has been said, he has set an NFL rookie TD passes record.  No other rookie QB has ever thrown for as many TD's as he did.

.....having said all that, Barkely's rookie season matches all of the hype surrounding him - Pre Draft.  He had a phenomenal rookie season.

Baker set the all time record for rookie TD passes, and he did that compared to having just 14 picks. Furthermore, he didn't even start the first 3 games, and he lost his head coach and offensive coordinator. And frankly, it might not be fair, but Baker did it in CLEVELAND. A place where QBs go to die. A place where nobody has succeeded. A place that evokes laughter and snickers across the world for so many painful reasons.

This is not to take anything away from Saquon, as his season was spectacular and he's also known to be a high character individual worthy of winning accolades and prestige. He's going to be exceptional for a LONG TIME. But you know what? He's still not a QB. Might not be fair, but that's how it is in the NFL. Additionally, think of the players that Baker elevated this year. Look at Breshad Perriman for example. A player cut by 2 different teams in the same year. How about Callaway having a solid rookie season, and Rashard Higgins continuing to improve? Njoku increasing his stats and so on. Baker made so many players better, and while that's a function of his position, it's still incredibly fun to see.

Great season by Barkley, but Baker is the clear choice. Best rookie season by a QB ever.

Well Z- turns out there's LOTS of different ROTY awards. Baker is almost certainly a lock for the Pepsi one considering it's based on fan voting, and he won ROTW way more than anyone else. He should get several- but if you peruse the lists, running backs have taken the honor a fair share of times...

Fuck you, Tallahassee. Aside from this team having been so bad...what else is it that you think there is to evoke laughter and snickers about Cleveland for?  I have been to Tallahassee....and I saw nothing there that gives it an edge over Cleveland.

It is always easier for rookie RBs than rookie QBs.  Their position is so much simpler, and with that ease, a talented one can come in and perform at a high...be it more instinctual level than a QB usually can right away.

It is far, far, far harder for a QB to excel as a rookie than it is for a RB

Larry,

Hopefully THIS works. I have one hell of a time posting pics. Pic of the shirt I couldn't pass up at the airport when we put Grandson on the plane.

What the heck are you talking about, bro? I didn't mean the CITY of Cleveland, I meant the Browns. They evoked laughter and the like. Why would I make fun of a freaking city that I'm FROM? Relax man.

I bought a Baker jersey right after the draft, promising my "Baker doubter" friends that I wouldn't wear it until he started. They countered with the statement that he had better win. The 1st game I wore it to was the Jets' game...Just had a hunch!!

Don't get me wrong- I love Baker, but he's got to make a couple Pro Bowls before I'm spending the $$$ on one.  :)

The Couch jersey gathering dust in my basement is reason enough. That said, Baker has already shown 5X more than Tummuh ever did....
