Report: Browns release OC John DeFilippo from contract

Jan 16 2016, 10:47 AMDan Wilkins

The Cleveland Browns are heading in a new direction on the offensive side of the ball after bringing Hue Jackson aboard as head coach.

Offensive coordinator John DeFilippo has been released from his contract after just one season in the role, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.

Jackson should look to fill out his coaching staff in the coming days, but indicated Friday he'll maintain play-calling duties and isn't planning to hire another offensive coordinator.

Jackson also served as the offensive play-caller during his one-year stint as the Oakland Raiders' head coach in 2011, overseeing a unit that finished ninth in total yardage.

Former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton recently met with Jackson about a potential position, and is considering an offer to become the club's assistant head coach/offense, reports Josina Anderson of ESPN.

Yeah, saw that coming. Being an "offensive assistant" is probably considered a demotion to being an offensive coordinator.

True... but the other thing it is also considered is employed.

Good luck to Flip.

Flip got trapped in a HC hire with higher expectations in play calling.(like his own) Good on Hue not to drag Flip any longer. Good Luck John DeFilippo!!

I really like what Flip did.. Even with all of JFF's distractions.. He got good play from the QB's , except Austin 'powerless' Davis.

Pretty standard stuff when you hire a new OC

Also Hue doesn't want an OC

Assistant Head Coach, Offense. But NO...that's not the same as an Offensive Coordinator? Semantics. Some teams out there that have designated OCs do not have their OCs call plays. Andy Reid calls his own plays....and several others.

I agree it is semantics if we call him Assistant HC versus OC, but we don't know for sure what the staff will look like.
