The Gipper
Whence...as is where/how did each team acquire its projected starting QB for this season: 1. Over Half of all projected starting QBs in 2013 were that team's own pick in the First round of the draft: Buffalo Emmanuel 2013 Miami Tannehill 2012 Jets Sanchez 2009 Baltimore Flacco 2008 Cleveland Weeden 2012 Pittsburgh Roethlisberger 2004 Indy Luck 2012 Jacksonville Gabbert 2011 Tennesse Locker 2011 Washington Griffin 2012 Detroit Stafford 2009 Green Bay Rodger 2005 Minnesota Ponder 2011 Atlanta Ryan 2008 Carolina Newton 2011 Tampa Bay Freeman 2009 St. Louis Bradford 2010 2. One team got its QB as an Undrafted College Free Agent after the draft: Dallas Tony Romo 2003 6. Two teams got their QBs by trading their first round picks for each other on draft day: (you could almost put these in category 1 above San Diego E. Manning 2004 NY Giants Rivers 2004 7. Five other teams got their QB through a trade: Houston Schaub in a trade with Atlanta in 2007 (Schaub an original 3rd round pick in 2004) Kansas City Alex Smith in a trade with San Fran in 2013 (Smith originally 1st round pick 2005) Oakland Matt Flynn in a trade with Seattle in 2013 (Flynn originally a 7th round pick in 2008) Chicago Jay Cutler in a trade with Denver in 2009 (Cutler originally a 1st round pick in 2006) Arizona Carson Palmer in a trade with Oakland in 2013 (Palmer originally a 1st rd. pick in 2003) 8. gftChris
Given that there's a distinct possibility that EJ Manuel won't be playing week 1 through injury or Kolb-ness, there'd be no rookie QBs starting. First time since...? Gipper, get on it, there's some trivia for ya

The Gipper
Apart and aside from all the guys listed above, here are the other QBs taken in the first round of the draft since Peyton Manning's year, and the categories I place them in: Good: Donovan McNabb Chad Pennington Dante Culpepper Average: Tim Couch Rex Grossman Byron Leftwich Jason Campbell David Carr Bad News Bears: Ryan Leaf Cade McNown Akili Smith Patrick Ramsey Joey Harrington Kyle Boller JP Losman Matt Leinert Vince Young Brady Quinn Jamarcus Russell Tim Tebow. jrb12711
2004 will still go down as the best QB draft class since 83? when Marino and the gang were picked. 2012 could also easily fit that bill.

First time since...? Gipper, get on it, there's some trivia for ya If you ask a question....you must know the answer. But I am going to make a guess and say possibly 2007. That was the year the Great Smashing Pumpkins when it came to QBs: Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn were the 2 first rounders. I know Quinn didn't start....and I don't think Russell was given the starting job out of the gate that year.

Well, lets look at that, shall we. Here are the most productive members of each quarterback draft class since 1983 inclusive: 1983: Elway, Marino, Kelly, OBrien, Eason 1984: Steve Young, Esiason, Hostetler, Schroeder 1985: Kosar, Cunningham, Bono 1986: Jim Everett, Rypien, Brister 1987: Testaverde, Chris Miller, Jim Harbaugh, Rich Gannon, Steve Beuerlein, Majkowski 1988: Chris Chandler, Stan Humphries 1989: Aikman, Rodney Peete 1990: O'Donnell, Jeff George 1991: Favre, Craig Erickson 1992: Maddox, Jeff Blake, Brad Johnson 1993: Bledsoe, Brunell, Grbac, Trent Green 1994: Dilfer, Frerotte 1995: McNair, Kerry Collins, Kordell Stewart 1996: Tony Banks 1997: Jake Plummer 1998: P. Manning, M. Hasselbeck, Charlie Batch, Brian Griese 1999: McNabb, Culpepper, Aaron Brooks, Couch 2000: Brady, Pennington, Bulger 2001: Vick, Brees 2002: Carr, Harrington, David Garrard 2003: Palmer, Leftwich, Grossman 2004: E. Manning, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Schaub 2005: Alex Smith, Rodgers, J. Campbell, Orton 2006: Cutler, Vince Young 2007: Kolb, Trent Edward 2008: Matt Ryan, Flacco, Chud Henne 2009: Stafford, Sanchez, Josh Freeman 2010: Bradford.... Tebow, McCoy? (they are the next best two in terms of production) 2011: Newton, Ponder, Dalton, Kaepernick These are not necessarily in order of most productive QB per year....but these groups are the most productive QBs of that particular year. A few years, like 1996-97 really only had one person worth mentioning. Note: those in Bold are in the HOF. Those in italics are good chances for future HOF. RED means Super Bowl winner. Blue means Super Bowl loser

Shep
27 of the 32 starters were first or second round picks. 24 were first round picks. Brees, Kaep, and Dalton were very high 2nd round picks, BTW. Wilson, Brady, and Romo are the only current "exceptions," guys were true finds after round 2. But Pryor is on track to start in Oakland, not whatsisname. Bottom line: Starting quarterback is the most first-round-centric position in football. I don't think Pryor starting is absolutely determined yet. He was a supplemental draft pick...but I can't recall the round. It wasn't first...second? Even though Rivers is declining now all 4 of those guys have been franchise level for years. There seemingly wasn't another class with more than two, or more than one with super bowl rings. Well, if you recall, there was a long time thought that the vaunted class of 1983 could end up without any SB rings. Those guys had all fallen short: Eason lost one, Kelly 4, Elway 3, Marino 1....until Elway's final hurrah in the late 90s that got him his rings. But, for 15 years...1983-1998 they had none. That class of 2004 has already doubled 1983 ring total.
