Westside Steve
We had a discussion about copyright law recently and since I'm in the process of finishing up my latest solo CD I've found out some things. Until yesterday I had been unable to get a hold of the woman who owns the rights to Stan Rogers music. Most reputable manufactures won't make discs unless you have legal clearance for each song. And I probably couldn't sell them on CD Baby if somebody else pressed them. Or on Amazon iTunes et cetera Plus I love this guy's work add hope his family is able to earn a living from it. There is something called a compulsory mechanical license and it can be obtained through, I believe, the office of copyrights. You have to pay the royalties up front but it's not much more Then purchasing a license from Harry Fox or something like it. As long as the song has already been released in the US by the copyright holder and you don't make any significant changes to the work you are okay with or without their permission. I'd suppose if they were really really upset there's probably a legal means to stop you but As long as you follow the rules I think it's legal. In case anybody cared. VaporTrail
Copyright and patent laws are the most obfuscated pieces of law I've ever had the displeasure of learning about. Fucking patent law is now first-to-file, which I think is kind of shit.
