The Gipper
My view on how to consider these candidates is to break them down into positions or units, e.g.: A. Senior Committee nominees regardless of position: Culp/Robinson B. QBs/RBs: Bettis C. WRs/TEs: Carter/Reed/Brown D. OL: Shields/Ogden/Allen E. DBs: Williams F. DTs: Sapp G. DEs/OLBs: Strahan/Haley/Greene H. MLBs: None I. Coaches/Owners/Contributors: DeBartolo/Modell/Parcells note, only 5 can be selected from the 7 various units. In looking at each categor I ask: is anyone clearly NOT on a par with their competitors at their position and I see it as follows: WRs...I personally don't see Reed on a par with Brown and Carter, so drop him DE/OLB...I don't see Greene on a par with Strahan and Haley, so drop him OL...all of these guys seem on a par and qualified to me, no one drops automatically DTs/DBs/RBs...only one of each, so no one drops Coaches/owners/contributors: My personal view is that guys that were directed to leave the league for the best interest of the league should not be voted in. Thus I have reduced my acceptance down to: Brown Carter Bettis Ogden Allen Shields Sapp Williams Parcells Only 5 of these 9 can I accept. Personally, I am going to punish Tim Brown for his recent stupidity over the 2002 Super Bowl issue....but beyond that I think Carter was just a more valuable player...eliminat Brown, accept Carter I am going to accept Parcells. I just think his whole body of work deserves it. I personally am going to accept Haley over Strahan. I think Strahan got a lot of extra hype by just playing in NYC, and Haley was instrumental in the Super Bowl runs of two different teams. That leaves just two spots between Bettis/Ogden/Allen/Shields/Sapp/Williams So, its a personal choice, and I think I go for both Allen and Ogden. This is more of a gut feeling choice...and honestly, if anyone chose 5 different people from this bunch it would be fully supportable. So that is my view. Nuckin Futz
I feel like Modell is going to get in, the final fucking knife in the back before we turn this thing around with Truckstop Jimmy. Zombo I have this sinking feeling that the NFL will kick Cleveland in the balls again and elect Modell. And of course, David will be there to accept with that fucking cigar hanging out of his mouth with that kiss my ass grin on his face. Just the thought of it makes me want to puke. The Gipper
I feel like Modell is going to get in, the final fucking knife in the back before we turn this thing around with Truckstop Jimmy. Zombo I don't think so. Peter King stated that he would NOT allow the man's death or the fact that "his" old team is in the Super Bowl this year sway his vote Modell's way. He also stated that one way he looked at it was "would what this person supposedly accomplish have been done even if he had not been there" and King's answer was: even if Modell had not been involved, the contracts with the major broadcasters would still have gotten done, the Monday Night Footbal would still have gotten done. Everything he is supposedly credited with accomplishing would have still been done even if he had not been on the scene. I suspect that many of the other writers feel the same way. I mean, if a Raven is to go in, I think that Jonathan Ogden will be a much better choice. Many people look at that as well.
The Gipper
Note: If Dave Robinson is selected, that would make 12 coaches/players of that 1960s era Packer dynasty to make the Hall of Fame including: Herb Adderly Willie Davis Forrest Gregg Paul Hornung Leroy Jordan Vince Lombardi Ray Nitschke Jim Ringo Bart Starr Jim Taylor Willie Wood ....and Dave Robinson The 1970s Steeler dynasty currently has 10 coaches/players: Mel Blount Terry Bradshaw Mean Joe Greene Jack Ham Franco Harris Jack Lambert Chuck Noll John Stallworth Lynn Swann Mike Webster So that would give those Packers a two player/coach lead...and many...including myself that one of the biggest HOF snubs has been perpetrated on another Packer player of that era: Jerry Kramer. hoorta
And he (Edit Modell) won't. This was his last chance. His presence will just fade from here. He died this season. Ravens in the Super Bowl. Stars were aligned as well as they could be. The move aside, I believe it was Peter King who said all of his "accomplishments" would have eventually gotten done with or without Art. And as long as Tony Grossi is alive and well, Art will never get in. The Move overshadows anything else positive he ever did- and then he pretty much got unceremoniously drummed out of the league when after the $50 million Baltimore\Maryland bribe still couldn't keep him financially afloat. I've always said- the owners\contributors list should be mighty short- like George Halas and maybe a few others. Or have their own wing- like the Baseball HOF does. Lewis and Ogden were his first two draft picks. got Ed Reed late in the first round. Ray Rice and a few others are headed on a great career path. Let's pretend he learned it all from Lombardi. The Gipper
Next year may be a good year for some of those who have been waiting to make it into the HOF. The list of first time eligibles for next year are highlighted by the following people: Tony Dungy Marvin Harrison Daunte Culpepper Warrick Dunn Shawn Alexander Muhsin Muhammed As far as I am concerned Harrison is the only one of those that is HOF worthy. Thus it may be the year for the likes of Strahan, Haley, Bettis, Tim Brown, Andre Reed etc., guys that haven't gotten in. These guys need to make hay next year because the following year will include first time eligibles Isaac Brucee, Edgerrin James, Walter Jones, Ty Law, Kevin Mawae, Orlando Pace, Junior Seau, Kurt Warner, Jamal Lewis, Rod Smith, Darren Sharpe....a few heavyweight candidates. But I say next year top candidates are Bettis/Strahan/Harrison/Shields/Haley. And they ARE going to bring back up the name of Paul Tagliabue. And hey: what about Marty Schottenheimer?
