  1. Censoring the Biden story: How social media becomes state media https://thehill.com/opinion/technology/521517-censoring-the-biden-story-how-social-media-becomes-state-media ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The bombshell and the blackout: How the media is covering Hunter Biden https://knewz.com/hunter-biden-emails-media-coverage/ Coverage of Hunter’s emails could not be easily found at The New York Times until 12 hours after the story broke, when it published a denial by the Biden campaign. Times reporter Maggie Haberman was lambasted by Twitter followers for being one of the few NYT journalists willing to acknowledge the Post article. It’s a story that merits the attention of other journalists, political operatives, national security experts, and also the public at large—not least of all because there are serious questions about its accuracy, reliability, and sourcing. And yet many in the media are choosing not just to ignore the story, but to actively encourage others to suppress any discussion of it. 6. Some early voters want to change their vote after Hunter Biden exposés https://nypost.com/2020/10/26/early-voters-want-to-change-vote-after-hunter-biden-exposes/ But “in some states, you can submit your ballot, have a change of heart and, and submit a new ballot,” Matthew Weil, director of the Election Project at the Bipartisan Policy Center, told Newsy. That includes New York, at least for those who mailed in an absentee ballot. “The Election Law recognizes that plans change,” the Empire State’s Board of Elections says. “Even if you request or cast and return an absentee ballot, you may still go to the polls and vote in person,” the rules state. “The Board of Elections is required to check the poll book before canvassing any absentee ballot. If the voter comes to the poll site, on Election Day or during early voting and votes in person, the absentee ballot is set aside and not counted.” Those who change their mind after mailing in a vote can also go to the County Board of Elections to request a new ballot to override the initial one, with the last one sent in counting. But those who voted early in-person do not get the same second chance. “Once you’ve voted at a machine, that’s it,” a Board of Elections spokesperson told The Post. “You cast one vote and that is complete.” Michigan, Minnesota, Washington and Wisconsin all have specific election laws allowing residents to change their minds after casting an initial vote — with those in the Badger State even getting three chances. In a recent update, the Wisconsin Elections Commission also noted that “many voters” had been getting in contact to see how they could revoke their initial absentee ballot — something they can easily do. “A voter, whether voting by absentee ballot in the clerk’s office or by mail, or at the polling place, can receive up to three ballots (the first two are spoiled),” the commission notes, saying it “has been the law in Wisconsin for many years.” Michigan also has clear-cut rules allowing an early mailed-in vote to be overridden. “If a voter has already voted absentee and wishes to change their vote … a voter can spoil their ballot by submitting a written request to their city or township clerk,” state law says. Minnesota voters also get a chance — though not if they have left it this late. “You can ask to cancel your ballot until the close of business two weeks before Election Day,” the office of Secretary of State Steve Simon says. If they contact the election office before then, though, they can have a new ballot mailed or vote in person on Election Day. Washington state also allows voters to “cancel a ballot at any time before Election Day,” said Weil, the Election Project director, with the state not counting any mailed-in votes until polling closes.

  8. https://www.cleveland.com/browns/2020/10/dividing-cleveland-browns-fans-into-those-who-say-but-baltimore-and-but-pittsburgh-and-those-who-dont.html CLEVELAND, Ohio -- This could be a dividing line for your friends and family, and it has nothing to do with politics. Lower stakes here, but not irrelevant. More along the lines of chocolate ice cream or vanilla, or a choice about music or movies or where to get your hair cut. Not a core principle, but a question for a personality test. In discussing the 5-2 Cleveland Browns this week, have you said, “but Baltimore” or “but Pittsburgh” as a primary part of your discussion? Maybe it slipped out -- everyone’s caught a bit of of “Happy Gilmore." But are you sitting down for the Adam Sandler marathon, including the new Netflix ones? Are you “butting” yourself out of the enjoyment of this Browns' start? I’m not saying it end should relationships, but a “but Pittsburgh” test isn’t a bad idea to judge compatibility. There are those who accept beauty in the world. And there are those who watch an Ohio sunrise and wonder if the rays danced more brilliantly off the waters around Baltimore. Or there are those who need content for their radio show. Earlier this week I solicited ideas about a quick retort for any optimistic Browns conversation that was about to be derailed by someone focusing on the two losses -- a “but Pittsburgh” defense. Among the suggestions -- Dawg Check; 5 and 2; 2020; Oh and 16; Onto Vegas; Kardiac Kids II; and We’re Having Fun Watching Football. See if any of those work for you. You: “I really think the Browns have a great shot at the playoffs with this 5-2 start. Football Outsiders has their playoff chances at 62.4 percent.” But Person: “Yeah, but they aren’t as good as Baltimore and Pittsburgh. And they haven’t beaten any good teams. They need to beat a good team. Cincinnati is terrible, but Pitt ...” You: “DAWG CHECK. WE’RE HAVING FUN WATCHING FOOTBALL.” While interrupting a conversation and storming off is my preferred method of human interaction, those hoping to enjoy 5-2 may have more civilized inclinations. So here are some facts to add context to “But” discussions. These are standings based around the idea of beating good teams and bad teams, for those who only like to count those games. The good teams are those with zero losses or one loss. Good teams can’t have two losses, because the Browns have two losses and the person you’re debating doesn’t think the Browns are good. So the cutoff line is high. The bad teams are those with zero wins, one win or two wins. Everyone else, like the Browns, fits among the 13 teams in the middle. Good teams (6): Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Baltimore, Tennessee, Green Bay, Seattle Bad teams (13): NY Jets, NY Giants, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Houston, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Dallas, Washington, New England, Denver, LA Chargers, Philadelphia Here then are the AFC standings counting only games against the top six teams, because good wins count for more in the standings of the mind. AFC “BUT” STANDINGS, GAMES AGAINST GOOD TEAMS ONLY Pittsburgh 1-0 Kansas City 1-0 Las Vegas 1-0 Indianapolis 0-0 NY Jets 0-0 Baltimore 0-1 Tennessee 0-1 LA Chargers 0-1 Miami 0-1 Jacksonville 0-1 Cincinnati 0-1 Buffalo 0-2 New England 0-2 BROWNS 0-2 Denver 0-3 Houston 0-5 The seven current AFC playoff teams according to the good wins standings: Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, N.Y. Jets and then a messy six-way tie for the final two wild card spots at 0-1. AFC “BUT” STANDINGS, GAMES AGAINST BAD TEAMS ONLY Pittsburgh 4-0 Kansas City 4-0 Tennessee 4-0 Baltimore 4-0 BROWNS 4-0 LA Chargers 2-0 Denver 2-0 Buffalo 1-0 Indianapolis 3-1 Miami 2-1 Cincinnati 1-1-1 Houston 1-1 Las Vegas 0-1 New England 0-1 New York Jets 0-1 Jacksonville 0-3 The seven current AFC playoff teams according to the bad wins standings: Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Tennessee, Baltimore, the Browns, L.A. Chargers and Denver. Unless beating bad teams is a bad thing? Should the standings be reversed? AFC “BUT” STANDINGS, GAMES AGAINST MEDIUM TEAMS ONLY Buffalo 4-0 Pittsburgh 1-0 Tennessee 1-0 Baltimore 1-0 BROWNS 1-0 New England 2-1 Las Vegas 2-2 Kansas City 1-1 Miami 1-1 Indianapolis 1-1 Houston 0-0 Jacksonville 1-2 Denver 0-1 Cincinnati 0-3 LA Chargers 0-3 NY Jets 0-6 The seven current playoff teams according to the medium wins standings: Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Baltimore, the Browns, New England, Las Vegas. The other option for “But” debaters on either side is to add up the records of the good standings, the bad standings and the medium standings and see what the current playoff teams would be. Do that ... and you’ll have the actual standings. You: “WE’RE HAVING FUN WATCHING FOOTBALL.”

  10. Odell Beckham Jr. suffers season-ending injury: how it affects his contract with the Browns https://www.foxbusiness.com/sports/odell-beckham-jr-suffers-season-ending-injury-how-it-affects-his-contract-with-the-browns The New York Giants traded Beckham to the Browns in 2018. A core muscle injury last year, coupled with a slow start this year and no remaining guarantees on his contract after this season, have left many wondering if the star wide receiver might be traded or cut. But Sunday night’s injury against the Cincinnati Bengals essentially solidified his place on next year’s roster because of an injury clause in his contract. According to the NFL Network, Beckham will earn $15.75 million next year – $12.97 million of which becomes guaranteed after an injury. That figure becomes a full guarantee if he’s on the roster by the third day of the league year, which he likely will be if he’s unable to pass a physical at that point – making him “uncuttable.” A trade would also be unlikely with three years left on his contract coming off a serious injury.

  12. Of the 44 hardest-hit congressional districts – the top 10% in terms of deaths – 41 are represented by Democrats, while three are represented by Republicans. These include the New York-area districts, as well as those in the Boston, Detroit and New Orleans metropolitan areas. The average death toll in each of these hardest-hit districts was 1,122 as of May 20. The next 100 hardest-hit districts, which represent the remainder of the top third of districts, with an average of 270 deaths, also are disproportionately represented by Democrats: 75 are represented by Democrats, 25 by Republicans. About two-thirds (68%) of the 44 least affected districts – the bottom 10%, with an average 13 deaths in each district – are represented by Republicans in Congress.
