  1. Politics Tennessee Democratic state senator convicted of wire fraud Sen. Katrina Robinson was accused of using grant money to pay for her wedding, honeymoon, subsequent divorce fees and home renovations A jury found state Sen. Katrina Robinson guilty on four out of five counts after she was unexpectedly acquitted by a judge days earlier on 15 separate counts for fraud, theft, and embezzlement, according to FOX 13 in Memphis. Her defense had requested all 20 charges be dismissed for insufficient evidence. After the acquittals, she was convicted of stealing around $3,400, far less than the more than $600,000 she was originally accused of taking from the school before she was elected.

  7. Economy Initial jobless claims unexpectedly rise More Americans filed for first-time jobless benefits last week despite a decline in new COVID-19 cases and the impact of Hurricane Ida subsiding. The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits rose by 11,000 to 362,000 in the week ended Sept. 25, according to the Labor Department. Analysts surveyed by Refinitiv were expecting the number of first-time filings to decline to 335,000. "Negative surprise alert: New jobless claims have risen for a third straight week," said Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate. "The latest increase confounded hopes for improvement. It appears to have been spurred, at least in part, by rising claims in the states of California and Michigan."
