Schottenheimer is in stable condition following complications with his disease. “As a family we are surrounding him with love,” Schottenheimer’s wife, Pat, said in a statement, “and are soaking up the prayers and support from all those he impacted through his incredible life. In the way he taught us all, we are putting one foot in front of the other . . . one play at a time.” The Schottenheimer family requested privacy. Schottenheiemer, 77, last coached in the NFL in 2006 with the Chargers. He spent 21 years as a head coach, coaching the Browns, Chiefs, Washington and the Chargers. IMO.....he would have been a lock for HOF if only he had gotten to a Super Bowl or two: Rank Coach Wins 1 ^ Don Shula 328 2 ^ George Halas 318 3 * Bill Belichick 280 4 ^ Tom Landry 250 5 ^ Curly Lambeau 226 6 * Andy Reid 221 7 Marty Schottenheimer 200 Let's put it this way: Jimmy Johnson only won 80 games as an NFL coach. And Marty had a much better overall win pct than Johnson: .596 vs. .567. Yet JJ is in the HOF and Marty isn't...just because he has those 2 Super Bowl wins. By the way....the HC with THE best win pct. who is not in HOF: Blanton Collier .672 win pct. which is 7th all time. Went from a spry still hiking Rocky Mountain trials woman in her early 80's to death at 87 with no ability to remember anything she was told within 5 minutes of the conversation. She said for over a decade that she was "losing it", but was self-sufficient up to her last 4-years when I moved her from her condo in Parma, OH to live with me in East Texas where she stayed for almost all the 4. At the end she was in Memory Care assisted living and thought I was my Dad... who'd passed two decades earlier. Terrible disease... especially during the stage when the sufferer still has those periods of lucidity those around the afflicted relish, but are a source of pain to the afflicted as they realize they are truly losing it. Inhaled some scrambled eggs at an assisted living place, got aspiration pneumonia, and was gone in a few days. Just an awful disease. I've been tested thoroughly by a diagnostic specialist since both her younger brother and sister also died of it. This is the part I think some folks don't realize is what actually kills people who have this disease, most of the time.. Your brain literally deteriorates to the point where your body doesn't remember how to survive. Watching my grandfather go from dementia to Alzheimer's was such a heartbreaking period of my life. The worst, to me, were those moments of lucidity where I saw a man who was aware at that point in time he was literally losing his mind. Talk about something I don't wish on my worst enemy. I just kept giving her the same answer since she asked it often near the end, "No, you are just losing your memory Mom." We all felt blessed that she could remember who we were all the way to the end. And could smile in recognition with our correct names when any of us 5 kids walked into the room. And, to be fair to Marty, I don't know that he was the one making those picks. Ernie Accorsi was still our GM at that point, and I am pretty sure he had final say. I am also sure that Marty had his input. As good and respected as Ernie was....he obviously had his share of misses. It sounds cold, but I can't help to think it was for the best. Seeing someone you love get to the point where they don't know their own family has to be fucking brutal. The last days of my grandfather in hospice with sever Alzheimer's were unfortunately not graceful, and extremely tough. I truly hope we find a breakthrough on this awful disease. He had to put his wife in a nursing home for her Alzheimer's, but she lived for like another 15-20 years even though she was totally non-cognitiant . He was devoted to her....but he actually died first. But then some die right away, like Marty here. I wasn't sure which would be the case with him. Now we know.
