It certainly wouldn't be the first time that an idea got Twisted completely out of Reality by people who write movie scripts for a living. But it's an interesting take Imo

Something can be based on or inspired by actual or real events and by the time they get from the outline to the screen they are completely bogus.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was inspired by actual events. Tobe Hooper was in hurry had a big box hardware store and the people in line we're taking forever. He looked to his left and saw a chainsaw exhibited and imagined hacking through the line.
