No more Indians

Recommended Posts

Sources confirm the New York Times report that the Cleveland Indians will be dropping their nickname. While it's unclear what they will replace it with, the Indians -- who have been called that for more than a century and nearly 17,000 games -- will be no more.

Meh. Lot's of good times AND heartache. It's just a name.

Edit

How many times at a chance at a World Series title and came up short? Maybe a fresh start is a good thing.

Personell, coaching, staff and ownership changes are a fresh start.

Acting as though a name magically wipes the slate clean and somehow the short comings of days past will be forgotten is.... silly at best.

Could be simple and just call them Tribe, since that's what most fans use anyway.

Well, people believe in silly things. Take this place (not the tribe board, but other forums on here) for example, there are some pretty "SILLY" things people believe in. Saying that, there are people out there that believe in curse of Chief Wahoo. So yes, it is a fresh start and it's not silly,  not in the slightest.

I personally don't believe in curses, the team has the right to change the name if they so choose. I also personally don't care what the Cleveland baseball team is called. They aren't changing the name of the Browns, that's all I care about.

True.   And playing in Cleveland, Ohio in a still pretty nice stadium for baseball.    No changes until at least 2022, still time to get all of your Indians stuff.

The Cleveland Baseball Club ?  Team ?

No,  I don't want one of these generic soccer names.  I want some kind of identity.

Well...it seems like they are getting rid of any decent players they had.  So, this name reboot may go like the Browns reboot from 1999....in other words, we would be in for a long spell of constant losing.

Fair to say?

Yeah, I don't know... They have been a cluster fuck of sorts since Jacobs sold the team.. I know they made the post season a couple of times and made a trip to the series in 16... But like always... They under achieve.... Doh'lan has 0 business owning a franchise.. His ineptness is infuriating!

I always thought the ownership is all mixed up in this town-Haslem was way in over his head, but perhaps after several business models he may have gotten it right. Dolan buys into MLB but he needs the NFL or NBA salary cap structure to guide him. Gilbert has always seemed willing to spend, and perhaps the MLB would be better for him in that regard.

Like I've heard elsewhere, the MLB needs a "salary floor" not a salary cap. Owners should have to meet some kind of payroll minimum to operate. Presently, the Indians payroll ($36.5 million) is on par to Mike Trout's one year salary ($35 million).

I'm not one to begrudge a person's wealth, but why buy a baseball team if you aren't willing to pay consistently to operate it? All owners should get a Covid pass, but this salary dump of star players is getting old. The Tribe's offense will be lucky to average 4 runs a game this season, it's a AAA type lineup now.

The name Naps was given to the team in "honor" of their best player at the time:   Napoleon  Lajoie

From Encyclopedia of Cleveland History:

The CLEVELAND INDIANS baseball team, a charter member of the American League, founded in 1901, was originally named the Blues, then the Bronchos, and from 1903-11 was known as the Naps, in honor of player-manager NAPOLEON LAJOIE.

I wonder why they called them the Bronchos...with a ch.   Or why they bothered to change to a different name each of their first 3 seasons.

Maybe they should just start that up again:  give the team a whole new name every year.   Their marketing department would love it because they could sell all new paraphenalia every year.
