Akron Aeros Appreciation

The Tribe might be winning a few games, but anyone looking for some real competitive baseball in northeast Ohio should check out the Aeros. They're first place in the Eastern League, and one of the best teams in all the minors with a 70-43 record. The best players should be sticking around through the playoff push, thinking the competitive atmosphere is more important than a few weeks of higher level pitching.

They still have 13 home games left in the regular season, so hopefully some of you check them out...and if you do, share your thoughts in here.

Here's a list of their top players....

Lonnie Chisenhall. Just called up from Kinston, where he played 3rd base and carried a .276 avg, with 18 home runs, 26 doubles and 79 RBI.

Jeanmar Gomez. A right-handed starter with a perfect game under his belt this year. Currently holding a 9-3 record with a 3.27 ERA, and 87 Ks in 99 innings.

Carlos Santana. The Indians' top prospect and our Victor replacement. Switch hitting catcher with a lot of pop. On the year he has a .281 average with 23 doubles and 19 homers and 79 RBI, and one of the more disciplined hitters in the minors with a .407 OBP.

Nick Weglarz. Thought to be our Baby Thome. Only 21 years old and measures in at 6'3, 245. The best raw power in our system and could be an even better hitting prospect than LaPorta, he has 15 homers and 64 RBI on the year.

Other notables are Beau Mills, one of our top prospects coming into the season but has struggled a bit. He has 10 homers and 61 RBI on the year

Matt McBride was dominating Kinston before his call up, and has 10 homers and 48 RBI in 71 games in Akron.

Jose Costanza is past prospect status but he's a switch-hitting center fielder with a .282 avg and 31 steals.

Should be a good team to watch, and the boys deserve some support for a great season.
