Looks like it will have a higher storm surge than two prior killer hurricanes that came through the same area, Audrey in 1957 and Rita in 2005.  I would not want to stick around for this thing.

Nah, I'm over north of Austin. Not even expecting much from hurricane bands here. I went through the NW edge of Audrey in 1957 and that was scary enough to stay very clear of any such storm.

Had some friends who stayed for a hurricane party on the Mississippi coast for Cat 5 Hurricane Camille in 1969. They both said it was the dumbest thing they ever did. Wiped out an apartment complex just blocks from where they were.

My grandmother survived the deadliest in US history, the Galveston Hurricane of 1900. The huge wall of debris you see in pictures stopped just a few blocks from their home.

So, my daughter in SA is good as well.   Though it may be that Tour,  who I believe lives in NE Texas, may be in the path of what is supposed to be some very bad flooding.

They reported this morning that Cameron, La. took a direct hit, but the storm surge that killed hundreds there in 1957 only reached 11 ft. instead of the predicted 18-20 ft.

Well....11 feet is still a hell of  storm surge.  That would flood the  entire first floor of most houses.   Now, I was in that area about a year and a half ago...Holly Beach,  and they did have most of the houses built on stilts...so maybe that saved a lot of them.

Depends on wave action as Crystal Beach discovered with Ike along Bolivar Point. Very few left standing. Click two picks to the right to see what remained from the original. A few picks more you will find a frame of the two spots together before and after on the same pic.

Well this is now what it looks like. Posted this evening after a flyby. Holly Beach is pretty well devastated, though more made it through than did at Crystal Beach with Ike.

Pretty wiped out.   Like I said, having those houses on stilts saved a lot of them from complete annihilation.

Shame of it is that Ike was a less powerful wind speed category, but a far larger mover of water because of it's size and slower rate coming in. Crystal Beach had most of theirs on stilts too, but it made no difference because of the height of the surge and the huge wave action. Ike actually came in higher on the Moody Mansion in Galveston than even the 1900 hurricane. It's marked in the building now.
