Because the predictions like the models are based on bullshitt and politics.

I hope the trend continues Steve. What I found interesting is using The Weather Channel's interactive map- the big outbreak in Georgia was centered around Atlanta. Only handfuls of cases out in the boondocks.

Yeah, nationally the daily death toll has been cut in half. Now that restrictions are being eased- I'm going to hold off till the end of the month on saying there was a lot of fear mongering going on.

I saw a map of the u.s. updated today can't find it now but most of the states we're in the color that represented reopening and a handful we're possibly reopening soon. Meaning still Crackdown. Ironically the ones that were still on Crackdown are the worst places in the Union. New York Pennsylvania New Jersey California Washington Oregon New Mexico??? Somebody else...

Hey- I got a "please help" letter from my Indian School\ Mission in Thoreau NM about the situation there. According to them, it's bad.  Of course some of those families on the Reservation are so isolated, their odds of contracting the virus are remote at best. Some still live in one room shacks with no running water, and depend on the Mission water truck to reload them once a week..

We completely fucked up the entire situation with the Indians. Should have just done what the Vikings did with the Irish.

Come on...

This is as dumb of a meme as the "biohazard" one the Vambo algorithm posted.

Let's think. Why might there not be a lot of cases in South Dakota when compared to California?

Michigan                                                              Sweden

9.9 Million population                                           10.2 Million population

700K largest city                                                   900K largest city

4800/sq. mi. pop density largest city                4800/sq. mi. pop density largest city

COVID Timeline:

Michigan                                                             Sweden

March 10 - First reported COVID death

March 16 - All schools closed

March 18  - First reported COVID death

March 23 - Stay Home & businesses closed

March 23 - 1300 cases, 15 deaths                    March 23 - 2000 cases, 25 deaths

April 2 - HS, colleges and big groups banned

Considered one of the strictest states                 Criticized for just social distancing

                                                                               Restaurants/shops open, no masks

Objective: Slow spread - 14 days at home          Objective: Herd immunity

Note: Michiganders are following the order and staying home extremely well

ONE MONTH LATER:

Michigan                                                               Sweden

April 24 - 36,000 cases, 3,100 deaths                April 24 - 18,000, 2,200 deaths

April 24 - 310 deaths per million                            April 24 - 217 death per million

Average age: 75                                                    Average age: 80 (87% deaths over age 70)

(Testing criteria has varied over time in the two places, but both places will have tested all those who passed away over the last month.)

Michigan acted quicker and harder than Sweden since March 23. That cannot be disputed.  Since that time, Michigan COVID-related deaths have increased 206% and Sweden is up only 88%. Michigan appears to be doing "worse" over the last four weeks than a place trying to infect its population to some degree.  That was not expected.

Not saying Michigan's stricter rules have caused more COVID problems and not saying herd immunity will prevail. (Maybe it will. Maybe it won't.)

HOWEVER, regardless of the objective, how do you argue shutting everything has been a better course of action than simple social distancing at this point? What is the argument that extending it would somehow miraculously start to help six weeks later?

The results do not appear to support it (after TWICE the quarantine time).

Oh that's cute, you found that thread on MGoBlog to post here. I imagine you read through all of the replies and the subsequent follow up thread, right?

How similar are Sweden and Michigan really?

- The largest cities may be similar, but what about the rest of the country? Sweden is 173M sq miles, Michigan is 96 (and how much of that is the UP?). How similar are the overall population densities?

- How similar are the pre existing conditions? Obesity? Smoking? Etc

- How similar is the access to healthcare? Remember all of the "socialism bad!" talk?

- What is the capacity of Sweden's healthcare system compared to Michigan?

- How many people are traveling into Michigan compared to Sweden?

- How similar are societal norms between Michigan and Sweden? Scandinavian countries are known for people giving a lot of personal space already

This can go on and on.

Additionally (this is a little old) but what is the data comparing Sweden to its neighboring countries?

Sweden: 3,175 deaths and 314 deaths per million

Norway: 217 deaths and 40 deaths per million

Finland: 260 deaths and 47 deaths per million

Denmark: 522 deaths and 90 deaths per million

Not great.

https://www.france24.com/en/20200517-sweden-s-covid-19-strategy-has-caused-an-amplification-of-the-epidemic

Reported coronavirus deaths per million in Sweden stand at 358, according to Statista – even higher than the hard-hit US, at 267. The Swedish figure is dramatically worse than those of Denmark (93), Finland (53) and Norway (44).

There is data all over the place if you look.

Don't really want to get into a war of statistics, but there is something to be said about geography. Once you get outside of Stockholm- the rest of Sweden is is mostly a whole lot of nothing. Sort of like Michigan when you get north of Flint? Where the cases of covid in the Upper Peninsula are so few Govnor Gretchen is going to open the UP starting Friday?.... Ya learn something new every day Woody- and now I know who Tucker Carlson is. Gee, Wyoming under no lockdown? That state is my home away from home. Outside of Casper, Cheyenne and Laramie, there's not much there. Eight years ago tooling down US 18 in eastern Wyoming in the general vicinity of Lusk, the nephew was getting irate because there's no cellphone coverage, and he's wondering where the cows are. Takes a lot of acres to support one cow on marginal grassland. Then, as I will never forget- we see "THE SIGN" Ranch- FOR SALE- 35,000 Acres. In case you're wondering, that's 55 square miles. Your neighbors are sort of distant.  :)

The Denmark thing is interesting. You could probably fly a drone from Copenhagen across the border into Sweden. Denmark is essentially following US guidelines. 1\2 Sweden's population? OK double the Denmark deaths, and it's still not even close regarding the body count.

I wish you could teach Dr. Woodpecker how to make sense. We'd love to go out west and see Montana etc. It's been said that Denmark - they do not have a cultural lot of shaking hands and hugging - it's the dense populations that have been hit so hard. I think it's NY that has about 1/3 of all the cases in the United States.

Sad but true - the worst states for covid ...the top four - by far - are democrat. Cities full of voters who want free stuff.

The idea behind topics, especially on a board not heavily trafficked, is to keep them condensed and compartmentalized to allow for efficiency in reading and response.

Every single page since I began peeking in on this side has, on average, 4-5 threads with zero reply per page.   I'm sure that number has gone up in the past year.    That would indicate content fatigue.

In short, if somebody posts multiple threads and half of them have no response or even funnier, the OP is the  only one to respond - then yes, that would be spam.

Well there are reasons for that I guess. A post condemning Hillary or Obama might get a response from somebody who actually loved Hillary or Obama and I'm not sure we have any of those here. So it's hard to work up a big argument. I mean we have some people that really dislike the Democrats and some that really dislike the Republicans but a lot of the posts we are probably on the same page. Even if we don't want to admit it. Beyond that a rational and reasonable argument for conversation isn't as much fun so there's that.

That would only work to further serve my point.  If you're posting condemning Hillary and, to my knowledge nobody here voter for her,  then you're basically pissing into the wind over and over and over...

The equivalent would be me posting a bunch of football related threads on topics with only very minor differences and then having a full page of articles go un-read or unreplied.   I don't post topics very often.  Once every few months at best, because I like to generate stimulating conversation.      Unless people just enjoy talking to themselves in their own head?

OK so here's what I will do I will private message you everything before I post to the board to get your approval, you can be the editor and chief and decide what makes it to the forum.

Again, by who's estimation? Yours? I don't respond to many of those threads because there is no need. They are so damning to the left that you guys can muster no response. Sometimes the truth needs no response
