The Gipper
Just for Shits and Giggles, here is the breakdown by position for the #1 overall pick in each Decade: 1930s: 3 RBs 1 OC !! 1940s: 6 RBs, 3 QBs, 1 OC/LB (Bednarik) 1950s: 2 RBs, 5 QBs, 2 WRs, 1 DB& 1960s: 5 RBs, 1 QB*, 1 WR, 1DE, 1 OT, 1 LB 1970s: 2 RBs, 3 QBs, 4 DEs, 1 LB 1980s: 3 RBs, 3 QBs, 2 DEs, 1 WR, 1 LB ^ 1990s: 1 RB#, 4 QBs, 2 DTs % 1 DE, 1 WR@, 1 OT 2000s: -0- RBs, 7 QBs, 2 DEs, 1 OT 2010s: -0- RBs, 7 QBs, 2 DEs, 1 OT * A lot of good QBs came out in the 60s...but the major bust Terry Baker was the only one taken with #1 overall # Kijana Carter in 1995 is the last RB taken #1 overall. Since he was a bust, maybe that was an omen @ Keyshawn Johnson is the last WR taken #1 overall .....note, Carter and Johnson taken in back to back years. % Russell Maryland and Dan Wilkinson are the only DTs taken overall #1...ever. ^ Andray Bruce is the last designated LB to be taken #1 overall (though...today he may be considered and "edge" up there with the likes of Myles Garrett/Jadaveon Clowney etc. & Gary Glick is the only DB ever to be taken #1 overall by the Steelers. !! Ki Aldrich is the only strictly OC ever taken at #1....though Bednarik also played OC.
The Gipper
It is Draft Day. (or will be in a few minutes of submitting this post). I am going to partially revert to my old style of asking Trivia, just for today, by giving several questions, not just one. ALL about the Cleveland Browns Draft history: Here you go: 1. A Which two players were selected by GM Sonny Weaver in Round one of the 2014 NFL Draft? B. Which two players were selected by GM Ray Farmer in Round one of the 2014 NFL Draft? 2. In their history the Browns....before this year... have only ever twice held (and used) the #10 overall pick in the draft twice: 1952 and 1961. Can you name the two players they took those years? 3. What college has the Browns selected the most players from in Round 1 of the Draft? 4. Based on all current reports, the Browns are likely to take a Left Tackle in round one.......from among the following candidates: Wills/Alabama; Thomas/Georgia, Becton/Louisville; Wirfs/Iowa; Johnson/Houston. From which of those 5 schools: Alabama/Georgia/Louisville/Iowa/Houston, have the Browns never taken a player in the first round of the draft? 5. As noted: Offensive Tackle seems the primary targeted position for the Browns to take a player in round one. In their history, the Browns have only ever taken 3 Offensive Tackles in Round One. Name these 3 players. Bonus: Thankfully, the Browns do not have pick #22....unless they make a trade between now and when they are to pick. The Browns have had the #22 pick 5 times previously......4 of whom have been complete busts. Name the ONLY #22 pick for the Browns who was NOT a bust. mjp28
Kind of a complicated question but it does give you the relative worth of NFL players by position. Franchise quarterback priceless even if you can actually find one with a first pick. RB and DE next and no TEs in the bunch. Not a bad question. DB Gary Glick played Safety....so no actual Cornerback. Aundray Bruce the only actually designated OLB....though as noted, he may today be considered an edge like Garret et al. The Gipper
Backed off on doing these for a while because of the draft....but now a lull has set in for a bit so I pick this back up. Here is today's trivia question(s): A. Twenty (20) people who are "primarily" associated with the Browns have made the Hall of Fame. Name as many as you can B. There are 5 more players who had a "cup of coffee" with the Browns that are also in the HOF. Name them. Hint on this one: While Dick LeBeau was drafted by the Browns, he never played a down for them, so he does not count here.
