THE BROWNS BOARD

Strange movies you actually enjoyed.

Recommended Posts

I'm asking for ideas.  I traditionally enjoy non-fiction based cinema.  Sometimes I'll venture into suspense or SCI-Fi, but that's about it.  However, I have actually run into some really bizarre/offbeat movies that you just can't deny were really well done.  Pan's Labyrinth comes to mind, but I'm losing interest in GDT's storylines.  So I'm going to name a few off the wall movies of my own, in hopes someone here has seen other movies in a similar vein they would recommend.

City of the Lost Children (1995)

Perfume: The Story of a Murder (2006)

Hmmmm... don't know those... so not sure I have any that are off the beaten path far enough for you... but here's a few I've enjoyed...

  • 12 Monkeys... just saw this again a week or so ago.
  • Time Bandits... some FX are a bit dated, but others still work
  • Brazil... 1984-ish flic w/ memorable cameo by Dinero

Just realized all so far are Terry Gilliam movies...

  • Blue Velvet... a whole different kind of strange from the above... Dennis Hopper as Frank is frickin' sick... "enjoyed" might not be the right word for this one.
  • Being John Malkovich was a hoot...
  • Altered States... an old fav that still holds up
  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind... is out there.

  •  I thought all three were quirky enough to be interesting

  •  didn't like it but it was riveting. Still more accessible than Eraserhead for what that's worth.
  • Being John Malkovich was a hoot...
  •  loved it! I think unkovich is an underrated actor too
  • Altered States... an old fav that still holds up
  •  did not like it when I saw it back in the day
  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind... is out there.
  •  I love it. One of the few I've seen multiple times.

"riveting" is a good word for Blue Velvet... not an easy watch, but can't look away....

Speaking of Minds... Confessions of a Dangerous Mind just sprang to mind... the surreal, sorta-maybe-true-ish story of Chuck Barris, host of the Gong Show starring Sam Rockwell.

It was the first time I noticed Sam's work. It made me a fan then and I remain one now.

Buckaroo Banzai

lol... never made it thru that one, but it brought to mind Reno Williams...

... which had Joel Grey in it playing an old Chinese man...

... which brought to mind Tony Randal...

... who did the same thing in Seven Faces of Dr. Lao...

... which may have been the 1st "strange movie" I ever saw...

... which brings us to Kevin Bacon! Or not...

However, also actually did bring to mind Mickey Rooney... but that portrayal is a bridge too far...

... and in that vein... Videodrome... although it passes "kinda strange" early and never looks back.

Honestly don't remember much of it besides the basic plot line, early James Whatshisname(?)... tall thin actor with acne scarring... and "Blondie" getting burned...

Damn.... not Spader... not Caan... shit... I gotta look... and it's Woods. Never really a fan so no real reason to remember his name I guess.

Don't forget Christopher Nolan's memento.

Guy Pearce's best work.... I really liked this movie a lot until I started noticing the times when Guy's character "remembers" something he shouldn't have... like where he parked...

I should have stopped watching it after the 3rd time... :)

On the other hand I was not nearly as intrigued by Inception

I hear ya... two very different size movies... two very different impact routes...

One story-telling based with a fascinating, even challenging, timeline...

The other visually overpowering... especially on the big screen... with an novel plot...

Inception isn't one of those must-watch stops when channel-surfing...

Memento used to be... but I watched it one time too many and admiring the craft that went into it gave way to seeing flaws.

Hmmm sounds like a thread...

What was that movie based I think on an Anthony Burgess novel about the cockroaches?

It was definitely a weird movie.....but, to me, not in a good way.

My favorite movie, Ive seene at 60 times at least. A Clockwork Orange.

Thank God the publishers snipped off Burgess' Final Chapter which stinks and ruins the book.
