These, I believe are just the  current players.  There also would be a separate list from the Senior Committee, plus the Coaches/Contributors list

I think that like maybe 5 guys from this list will be named.   Who are your 5?

In addition to the regular HOF  process,  the PFHOF is also doing a "Centenniel Class" of 15 people that they are going to induct into the Hall of Fame.

At least one of those names has been announced.  A semi-surprise:

Bill Cowher.

Now a member of the PFHOF

The NFL HOF President and CEO came on CBS live in the pregame and told Bill Cowher he was in.

His wife and daughter were there, quite a moving moment.

OK,   so apparently  the 20 members of the Centennial Class will include the 5 Modern Players to be inducted from the list in the  OP above.

So, in essence, the "special class"  is only 15 people.    This is good in this sense:   it reduces the chances that fucking Art Modell would be selected.  Why they keep bringing his name up in this process, I don't know.

I guess we should ask:  why isn't Marty on that list?   Every other one of the Top Ten winningest coaches are in the HOF or are on that list, except Belichick and Reid, who are still active and not eligible:

That's a very fair question Gip...and I had forgotten Marty coached just has many games as the great Paul Brown..but Marty's playoff percentage may have a lot to do with it though?

Remember too a lot of the old-timers only had 12 or 14 game seasons and where measured fewer playoff games.

And Halas had 31 ties? Wow different era of football.

Jimmy Johnson just named to the HOF.    Did he and Cowher really deserve it over  Coryell, Flores, Holmgren, Parker, Reeves, Vermeil?

Or did those two get it because they are personalities  on the Gameday shows on CBS and Fox respectively.  Seems like that, a bit.

Just saw it live on FOX at halftime.  Jimmy was very moved and choked up he did mention his former assistant coaches and players he could barely talk.

But still you hope that the on air exposure wasn't any kind of a factor getting into the NFL HOF.

Cowher probably. But Johnson???

Most of the coaches you  listed including Johnson didn't even make this list. But Marty did.

Cowher won a lot. Won the division 8 out the 15 yrs he coached.

A tad better resume than HOF'er Tony Dungy. So yeah he deserves it if Dungy does.

17. Bill Cowher

Pittsburgh 1992-2006

149-90-1 (15 years), 12-9 in playoffs

8 division titles

2 Super Bowl appearances (XXX, XL)

Super Bowl XL champion

15. Tony Dungy

Tampa Bay 1996-2001; Indianapolis 2002-08

139-69 (13 years), 9-10 in playoffs

6 division titles

Super Bowl XLI champion

Pro Football Hall of Fame, Class of 2016

Apparently the criteria for Marty making this list has nothing to do with Super Bowls or playoff wins.

21. Marty Schottenheimer

Cleveland 1984-88; Kansas City 1989-98; Washington 2001; San Diego 2002-06

200-126-1 (21 years), 5-13 in playoffs

8 division titles

Schottenheimer coached four different teams and had only two losing seasons. That tells you how good he was.

Shottenheimer was a great regular season head coach.

Awful in the playoffs. Not middling, not mediocre, but awful.

To be nice he just wasn't "opportunistic".

No trophies will be named after him.

Marty's problem was he never learned from his mistakes.. He was a professional circle jerk as far as coaching goes

OK...well, these lists are subjective.

Dan Reeves went to the SB  4 times with 2 different teams, and lost them all.   Would one win have made a difference?   It didn't for Marv Levy and Bud Grant.....each 4 time SB losers.......but inducted.

Flores?   With the Rooney rule discussion, maybe we should say that the HOF should have their own Rooney Rule...His background is Hispanic/Native American.    If they have Dungy in there for just one SB win, why not Flores with 2?

Marty had more wins and a better win pct. than Cowher....in the regular season.   So, obviously winning in the Postseason is a substantial requirement for induction......as Marty and Reeves are not in, even with substantially better regular season records.
