Browns targeting Rams DC Wade Phillips

Recommended Posts

For same role. Incredible..

“Should Cleveland decide to move on from Wilks despite those limitations, Phillips has more than proved his worth over the years. His experience as a defensive coordinator dates back to 1981, and he recently helped the Rams to Super Bowl LIII with the likes of back-to-back reigning Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald.

Phillips also won Super Bowl 50 as the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator, and his unit featured Super Bowl MVP linebacker Von Miller. “

Doesnt Phillips run a base 3-4? If we bring him here would we trade Garrett?

I would sure hope not. Myles would likely have to convert to a pass rushing edge OLB. I think he would excel as an LB.
He’s so athletic that I’d imagine he will suffice in coverage.

Good read about Phillips’ defense:

Wade’s defense needs ILBs that can cover(Mack Wilson and Joe Schobert)

Would Kirksey oppose Garrett at OLB?

Wade will be 73 in June... I'm shocked he keeps wanting DC jobs.... but if he wants one more I'm good with that. He always seems to instantly produce a great D, but never quite sustains it.

Who hires the coordinators in Haslam Land?  The HC?  DePodesta?  The son-in-law?

I'd be shocked if it's not Stef that has final say, but candidate input from others would seem wise. Stef's spent almost his entire career in MN, so he's not been exposed to the broadcast of coaching cross-sections.

Since THE PROCESS wanted to draft Trubisky instead of Garrett, maybe we can trade Myles to Chicago?

It did??? Then why isn't Trubs a Brown???

There's nothing all that "different" about it when compared to some of the 40 under looks you'll see across the league.    Alignment and gap assignment is the big deal here.

Remember the Niners under Harbaugh? Vic Fangio was their D-cord and shares some similar philosophy to Wade - especially up front.    Go to YouTube, check them out, then go watch the Bears the past 3 seasons as well.  Same guy, same scheme.

Vernon would be the edge across from Garrett in base or pretty much any other look.

Not a fan of the 3-4, if I recall correctly..?

The thing is, if you don't have even a half decent QB, what good is a DE (edge rusher) going to do you?   You will pretty much have the same lousy losing team....except you'll have more sacks.  The QB of a football team has a value far and away above any other position. So when you ain't got one, you have to grade the draft on a curve.  The DE might grade higher than the QB in the draft....but the value of the position bumps up the grade of the QB.   Unless the DE is good at throwing TD passes.

If the QB is someone besides Mitchell Trubisky, perhaps... 😁

How the Browns reached the decision to take Myles Garrett at No. 1

The Browns had a lens trained on Myles Garrett for more than a year, hoping they’d somehow land the star defensive end from Texas A&M in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown, who gave a wide-ranging interview on Mike & Mike on Thursday morning, outlined the process behind making Garrett the first-overall pick.

Brown said Cleveland long coveted the dynamic edge rusher before ever learning it would hold the No. 1 pick.

“Myles really was the guy that, from the start of the football season and prior to that, we had our eyes on and were watching,” Brown said. “Obviously we didn’t know we’d be in the No. 1 position at that point, but a guy that really since he entered the SEC as a freshman had lit the league on fire.”

Garrett, who amassed 31 sacks and 47 tackles for loss in three seasons at Texas A&M, figures to emerge as an immediate playmaker on a Browns defense that finished 31st among 32 teams in sacks last season.

Brown said Cleveland reached a consensus to take Garrett at No.1 “a couple weeks before the draft” after “just taking in the information and making sure that we were sure about everything.”

“We have a lot of discussion internally in our building really pushing on things really even if there's consensus, we really push on those types of decisions to make sure we’re not overlooking anything,” Brown said.

No shit. That's the rumor Kubiak and Phillips come along with stefanski.

Not sure there's a "the rumor" yet, but certainly seeing both names as a rumor.

Interesting tidbit for the Stef naysay-crew... turns out the idea to being in Kubiak to save Stef was Stef's idea... at least according to one account.

Vikings assistant head coach and offensive advisor Gary Kubiak would be another potential hire. Stefanski recommended the addition of Kubiak last offseason to install a similar system to what has made San Francisco more successful all season.

Garrett's play as a DT has already proven he could handle it if you add a few more lbs of muscle. Or with his Von Miller speed you make him one of the OLBs.

The essence of his scheme is tailoring the roles to fit the skill of the players on his team.  You know, like a good coach.

Read this article - especially the part about what to do with the leftover DE from the prior season's 4-3 front - Quinn.  "Quinn only has to contain the edge and rush the passer." -- and if you called that role "DE" that sounds an awful lot like a 4-3.  Call it whatever you want as long as it works...

How's the view of DePodesta's colon, since your head is up to your shoulders up in it?

Oh I'm sure this was just a bullshit report, all the talk of late about this very thing is just nonsense, completely made up. Anything that paints your precious "THE PROCESS" in a negative light must be extinguished! ALL HAIL THE PROCESS! HEIL DEPODESTA!
