THE BROWNS BOARD

Why should we have faith that Haslam will get it right this time?

There's no reason to have faith... however, there is reason to have hope and his name is Depo.

Knock his lack of football "guyness" if you want, but he's just what I want in an "executive search"... and at it's core that's what a HC search is.

In any organization there's a point where any technical prowess an employee has displayed to gain attention becomes irrelevant when considering his elevation to the next level. There comes a point where tactical command becomes secondary to strategic thinking.

Having a guy who won't be blinded by command of Xs and Os, but will be focused on looking for the command of people is just what we need. And it helps that he has credibility with the big bosses on this committee bu virtue of his opposition to the last two hires.

Well....we shall see. The early returns on him are not great....but let's see.

Are you saying that they didn't have that goal with their first go at it when they hired Banner and Lombardi and had them do the head coaching search?

I presume they thought that since Banner hired Lombardi they were aligned but didn't know that Lombardi is a self-serving snake.

He really is.

It would have been wicked funny if Lombardi and Hue would have worked together.

Report: Paul DePodesta's Browns Contract Expires This Week

ByJared Mueller 4 hours ago

The Cleveland Browns are in the middle of a head coaching search that has moved at a breakneck speed over the past week. The Browns have already interviewed Mike McCarthy, Eric Bieniemy, Robert Saleh and Greg Roman. There are reports that their schedule to interview Josh McDaniels has been moved up as well, with the Patriots eliminated from the postseason.

Leading all of those interviews, and the coaching search process as a whole, has been chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta. DePodesta was originally brought in along with Sashi Brown to give direction to the team. According to reports, his guidance has either not been accepted or blown off completely since Brown's departure.

Now comes a report that DePodesta's time with the Browns is up in the air as his contract expires "this week":

There are many ways to look into this report, if true.

First, it is unlikely that Jimmy and Dee Haslam would have given DePodesta the responsibility of the coaching search if they did not have an agreement for him to at least see the entire search till the end. With the possibility that the Browns new head coach could be coaching in the Super Bowl in February, it would be unlikely that the search was certain to end this week.

Second, as the chief strategy officer, as well as someone who has an interest in future employment somewhere, it is unlikely DePodesta took on the responsibility of the coaching search without a plan to complete the process.

Third, as Schefter points out, this could be an opportunity for the Browns to line up the contracts of the three most important people on the football side. Signing DePodesta to a contract the same length of the head coach and, then, the general manager would increase the perception that the Browns are, finally, aligned.

The report does raise questions about the future, however. Could the coaching search be DePodesta's last act with the Browns? Fans and media would pick apart the reasons for a DePodesta departure if they were to happen even if they are not founded in truth.

The other question about DePodesta's future that is raised is related to his role. While Jimmy Haslam made it clear in his press conference that DePodesta's role would not be changing, could that change with a new contract? Could this news leaking cause concern for head coaching candidates promised one thing related to DePodesta's role in the organization but now finding out he is not under contract?

There are multiple possible endings to this story: DePodesta can sign a new contract to continue his current role, he could sign a new contract with a new, assumedly more expansive, role or he could leave the Browns at the end of the coaching, and possibly GM, search.

If Schefter is correct, the Browns have another set of questions needing to be answered in the very near future.

Sure, the question being:   Why would Depo want to continue with the Browns?    Maybe he could see an opportunity to work for a much more stable (i.e.  not as flaky of an owner)  organization.   Be that in baseball, football, even basketball.  (hockey?)....or, even  like English premier league soccer?    As I understand it, his "skills" are not necessary oriented toward any partiular sport.
