THE BROWNS BOARD

Nick Chubb running behind Quentin Nelson. Sorry, Bake.

Darnold and Mayfield are both "seeing ghosts".  S. Barkley, D.Ward and Bradley Chubb have been hurt.  Nelson is a game-wrecking guard.  Larry Allen style.  Establishes the identity of your offensive line for 12-15 years.  Strong in pass-pro and flat out scary blocking on the second level.  Nick could easily run for 2000 yards running behind this future legend. Sorry, Bake.

What is your point?  Nelson is a great player.  The Colts certainly are not going to be giving him up.

Just bringing up a debate.  Nelson or Mayfield.  Maybe it's obvious Mayfield.  I think Nelson transforms the culture of the franchise like he did the Colts.  They went from worst to first in pass-protection in one year. They run at will. Nelson is a major player in the NFL.  Denzel Ward was always undersized.  Nelson easily over Ward and maybe Mayfield.  He was projected to dominate and had tape to back it up.  Am I wrong?

Nevermind that Mark Glowinski and Braden Smith were absolute' strike-gold type picks that blossomed into their own when paired with even more young talent around them.  Forming one of the NFL's best lines on the cheap over the course of one off-season.

Nope, All Nelson.          A great player? yes.   Worth bitching about?  Not so much.           (Which this is - NOT a debate)

With respect, no way Nelson isn't the guy that transformed that line.  He made that O-Line a force that you must respect.  He's the factor, period.

He's their best player and the leader along the line - no doubt.  But the rest of the line is NFL quality and you're ignoring that for the sake of a rant.

your kinda playing cherry picking fantasy football., but we never had a Andrew Luck to protect... before the 2018 draft, your 3 QB's are Tyrod Taylor, Drew Stanton & Kevin Hogan..your starting G's=Bitonio & Ziedler.. your starting CB's are..BBC/ Jamar Taylor & Terrance Mitchell... Q..Nelson, yes a great player..but surely not the right fit at right time..

Nelson is and was the right player for every era.  He just dominates all day, every play.

This, of course, survives on the notion that Nelson would somehow as an individual player earn this team more wins than it currently has on his own merit.

Which simply isn't true despite his outstanding play on the field.

Yeah, tia. We can use the Ghoolie arguement  here. Joe Thomas is  going to  the HOF, and how much  did that help the Browns?

The Ghoolie argument is a different context.  Ghoolie basically saying lineman were worthless. This is an outright player to player comparison being Baker vs Nelson.   Which is a story too early to settle.

Joe Thomas was the best ever at protecting terrible QB's.  Props.  Nelson can do that and completely dominate in the run game.  Dominate.  Nelson is the heartbeat of their offense.  Thomas is HOF, but Nelson seems like a throwback.  He punishes people to the whistle.  Character guy, too.  Thomas never missed a snap because he was basically a Wal-Mart greeter.

See if I get this right???

At the time we had Bito and Zeitler, no QB and weak CBs, we should have taken Nelson?

Nelson is a generational talent.  Just watch the way he run blocks.  He was the exception to rule in terms of drafting OL.  A guard that can transform an offense.  It doesn't happen until him.  Would Baker take him over skinny D.Ward.  Who knows?

Hindsight is 20/20 lots of “generational” talents have been passed on.
Ward is great and this thread is pointless

Most threads are pointless.  Healthy Ward is great.  Nelson should be elite for 12-15 years.  Ward at age 30 at his size might be finished.

OK, well....Trivia Question:  How many offensive Guards have been taken with the overall #1 pick in the draft since the drafts inception in 1936?

What debate?  I don't remember you announcing you wanted Quentin Nelson at #1 overall or #4 overall until this bout of hindsight 20/20.

LT is even more important than LG in this era; and Joe Thomas played in how many Playoff Games because of our QB position?

When I think of where we need to upgrade on our Offensive Line - I don't begin with LG Joel Bitonio.

Our defense was also pretty talent deprived at covering people in the back end before Denzel Ward was selected at #4.   FWIW, his blocked FG against the Rats was the difference between winning and losing to the Rats.

Sometimes you have to wait longer than a guy's first 22 regular season games before you make conclusions about his career.

There've been maybe two "generational" OGs in the modern era... Steve Hutchinson and John Hannah... plus a handphul oph runnerups...

Nelson may well be a 3rd, but he has a ffffffffffffew more years of excelling to go.

Welcome back "f" key...

There was another Notre Dame OG that has gotten as much praise as Nelso:   Zach Martin.

You brought up Hutchinson and Hannah for a reason.  Nelson was that guy in the womb.  Born destroyer and his college tape bore that out.  He's special and just watch the rest of his career play out.  O-Lineman like him happen once a decade, maybe.  First or fourth pick, he would have been a steal.

OP, you aren't understanding people's point. Nelson could end up being great, generational guy, but at that time wasn't the teams biggest need.

And just because someone is a generational talent doesn't mean you take him. If the Dolphins select Tua next draft and he plays well and they have the opportunity, should they then draft Trevor Lawrence?

But Baker ( no matter what you think of him) doesn't belong in this discussion. Not just because he plays the most important position in sports, but because the Browns could have had Baker AND Nelson, there is no either/or
