The Gipper
We are in All in the Family/Happy Days territory here....as this thread is a spin off thread from a spin off thread (original thread being the Bart Starr RIP thread..then the QB thread): Here is the list of those teams that have appeared in three or more consecutive title games in history (NFL/AFL/AAFC) and their records in those games. Championship games having begun to be played starting in 1933: NY Giants 1933/34/35 2-1 Chicago Bears 1940/41/42/43 3-1 Cleveland Browns 1946/47/48/49/50/51/52/53/54/55 7-3 LA Rams 1949/50/51 1-2 Detroit Lions 1952/53/54 2-1 Green Bay Packers 1960/61/62 2-1 Houston Oilers 1960/61/62 2-1 NY Giants 1961/62/63 0-3 San Diego Chargers 1963/64/65 1-2 Green Bay Packers 1965/66/67 3-0 Miami Dolphins 1971/72/73 2-1 Buffalo Bills 1990/91/92/93 0-4 New England Patriots 2016/17/18 2-
The Gipper
Notes: 1. As usual, I consider those "NFL and AFL" Championship games played in the years 1966/67/68/69...as being the mere equivalent of a conference championship game...similar to AFC/NFC conf. title games played now. This is why the 1967/68/69 Oakland Raiders do not appear above, even though they did play in 3 "AFL title games" in those years. 2. Yes, I lump the Browns era from 1946-1955 together as a single era. They did in fact play in 10 consecutive league championship games. Even if you counted only the 6 NFL years, that would still be the longest such streak in history....and if you only counted the 4 AAFC years, that streak would have only been matched twice, by the 40s Bears and the 90s Bills. 3. Note that only the Giants and the Packers have had more than one streak of appearing in 3 consecutive title games. But note that 11 of the current 32 teams have at some point in their history appeared in 3 straight title games....or a bit more than 1/3rd of all current NFL teams. Also note that the Packers had a streak of 3 NFL titles..pre playoff era (29.30.31) 4. The New England Patriots are in the midst of a 3 game appearance streak....the only time they have done that in their now 18 year long dynasty. And something to remember: they went 5-11 the year before they won that first Super Bowl game in 2001. 5. Also notice that this Pats 3 game streak is only the third time in the "Super Bowl Era" that a team has made 3 straight appearances...plus there is the hybrid NFL title game/Super Bowls of the 60s Packers. 70s Dolphins and 90s Bills being the others. Not even the 70s Steeler dynasty nor the 49ers ever made it to 3 straight SB games. 6. Note that for the streaks by the 50s Rams and 50s Lions....their opponent for 5 of their 6 games (3 then 3) were the Browns. Only the 49 Rams didn't play the Browns in their streak...because they were still in separate leagues at that time.
