"

Much of the crime has been attributed by analysts to government-backed gangs – referred to in Spanish as “collectivos” – who were deliberately put in place by the government.

“They were set up by the government to act as proxies and exert community control. They're the guys on the motorcycles in the poor neighborhoods, who killed any protesters,” said Vanessa Neumann, the Venezuelan-American president and founder of Asymmetrica, a Washington, D.C.-based political risk research and consulting firm. “The gun reform policy of the government was about social control. As the citizenry got more desperate and hungry and angry with the political situation, they did not want them to be able to defend themselves. It was not about security; it was about a monopoly on violence and social control.”

So while Venezuelan citizens were stripped of their legal recourse to bear arms, the “collectivos” – established by Chavez when came to power – were legally locked and loaded. Deemed crucial to the survival of the socialist dictatorship, the “collectivos” function to brutally subjugate opposition groups, while saving some face as they aren’t officially government forces, critics contend."

and...

"And adding to the complication, the ranks of the police force are beleaguered by crime and corruption. “Crimes are committed by police, a lot of the criminals are police themselves,” said Saul Moros, 59, from the Venezuelan city of Valencia.

Luis Farias, 48, from Margarita, said that gun violence was indeed bad when guns were freely available for purchase. But it became much worse after the gun ban was passed. “Now the criminal mother is unleashed,” Farias said. “Trying to ban guns didn’t take guns off the streets. Nobody cares about the law; the criminals don’t care about the law.”

note from the end of the article - link above....

" The problem from the beginning and still now is that there are too many people in Venezuela who are lawless. Crime is a way of living,” said Emberly Quiroz, 25, mother of three. “Access to weapons won’t solve the problem.”

Criminals are coming here. There is no one left to steal from back in their home country.

The bible speaks of a time when swords would be turned into plowshares but that time has not come. Ben Franklin nailed it saying, "those who beat their swords into plowshares usually end up plowing for those who kept their swords".

In the case of Venezuela the unarmed population is at the mercy of the tyrants in power because they had their swords taken away and it is why we in this country must continually fight against the left who want citizens to be disarmed.

as usual the un intellectual here at the browns board miss key points. Any tyrannical govt restricts gun ownership for obvious reasons....and tbere have been plenty of tyrannical crony capitalist countries. Yet in Nordic countries thst lean towsrd democratic socislism...they allow gun ownership with some restrictions.

boy it would be another narrative downer if some major capitslist country hsd some of the most restrictive gun laws in the world...

"If Japanese people want to own a gun, they must attend an all-day class, pass a written test, and achieve at least 95% accuracy during a shooting-range test. Then they have to pass a mental-health evaluation, which takes place at a hospital, and pass a background check, in which the government digs into their criminal record and interviews friends and family. They can only buy shotguns and air rifles - no handguns - and every three years they must retake the class and initial exam."

"Japan has also embraced the idea that fewer guns in circulation will result in fewer deaths. Each prefecture - which ranges in size from half a million people to 12 million, in Tokyo - can operate a maximum of three gun shops; new magazines can only be purchased by trading in empty ones; and when gun owners die, their relatives must surrender the deceased member's firearms."

True. As the first child born in the US of a family that fled the “wonders” of Socialist Cuba, I can say without doubt that Socialism loves to demonize its enemies. They need enemies, so they can divert attention from their failures. Just as they need to disarm their populations to control them.

Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, Zimbabwe, and others have all gone the path of gun control. Where it leads isn’t pretty. My family suffered under the despotic rule of Socialism. Our property was stolen and wealth confiscated. Some of my family were murdered by government agents. Others had to flee their homeland with nothing but the shirts on their backs.

In the absence of an armed citizenry, individual liberty disappears. I’m not just talking about distant lands or ancient history.

America’s worst mass shooting? Wounded Knee, where U.S. troops opened fire on unarmed native Americans, killing 150 men, women, and children of the Lakota tribe. What of decades of racist lynchings of unarmed blacks in the South? And would President Roosevelt been able to literally imprison Japanese Americans if they’d been armed against government agents?

The Second Amendment protects all the other rights. It gives our Constitution teeth. It gives us the ability to protect our loved ones and, more importantly, our civil liberties.

Gun owners aren’t anything like the Left paints us to be. We’re hard working, honest, law abiding, caring people. The real bigots and haters are the “progressives” who want to demonize and disarm their fellow Americans. They can’t even show respect and politeness at their own rigged Town Hall Debate.

Vladimir Lenin pronounced that “the goal of socialism is communism.” To which author Kevin D. Williamson adds “The difference between communism and socialism is that under socialism central planning ends with a gun in your face, whereas under communism central planning begins with a gun in your face.”

You have been warned.
