Ah yes fun with numbers one of my boring hobbies: Data from the past 34 NCAA Tournaments. The information below is from 1985 through 2018. The first year there were 64 teams in the tournament was 1985. The data shows the record of each seed in the first round of every tournament. A few Fun Facts: * In 2018 #1 Seed Virginia lost to #16 UMBC, this was the first and only time a #1 seed lost to a #16 Seed. * All four #1 seeds have only advanced to the final four 1 time <---- wow, only once? * The lowest seed to win a championship was a #8 Seed * A #5 seed has never won the championship <---- huh? That's wierd. The table below shows the records for each pairing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. We analyzed data from 34 tournaments, and there are 4 matchups per tournament, per seeded pair(1 for each region), for a total of 136 games for each seed. #1 Seed vs #16 Seed - 135-1 - 99.26% Winning Percentage #1 Seed #2 Seed vs #15 Seed - 128-8 - 94.12% Winning Percentage #2 Seed #3 Seed vs #14 Seed - 115-21 - 84.56% Winning Percentage #3 Seed #4 Seed vs #13 Seed - 108-28 - 79.41% Winning Percentage #4 Seed #5 Seed vs #12 Seed - 89-47 - 65.44% Winning Percentage #5 Seed <---- the big jump -but- 5, 6, 7 all pretty close. #6 Seed vs #11 Seed - 85-51 - 62.5% Winning Percentage #6 Seed #7 Seed vs #10 Seed - 84-52 - 61.76% Winning Percentage #7 Seed #8 Seed vs #9 Seed - 69-67 - 50.74% Winning Percentage #8 Seed

And it is the gap that defines the 5-12 as being the upset match up. Interesting that the 8-9 match is basically a coin flip... just as it should be. That was the only real upset of the first day. There were a couple of 10s over 7s (Minnesota and Florida, I think), but a 10 over a 7 isn't a big deal. New Mexico St. had a chance, but a winning shot at the buzzer missed.

E.g. back in 1986 my Cleveland State Vikings went to the sweet 16 as a #14 seed I believe. Has any seed that low or lower ever done better? The Gipper
I found the answer to my question: 15 seeds[edit] There has only been one 15-seed that won its second-round game. Year Winner Loser Score 2013 Florida Gulf Coast (7) San Diego State 81–71 14 seeds[edit] There have been two 14-seeds to win their second-round games. Both were against 6 seeds. Year Winner Loser Score 1997 Chattanooga (6) Illinois 75–63 1986 Cleveland State (6) St. Joseph's 75–69 So, my Vikings are only 1 of 3 15/14 seeds to make the Sweet 16. The Vikings coulda/shoulda made it to the Elite 8....but they played Navy with David Robinson in the 3rd round....and the refs allowed Robinson to commit about 50 fouls without calling them. Sure, he was a huge man and a great player....but it also helps when the refs don't call fouls on you that you commit. He went over the back of the somewhat smaller Cleveland State players on every rebound and never got called. Like I said, his "push off" quota in that game was about 50-100. (and why are they "your" Navy Middies?) Did you attend the Naval Academy?
The Gipper
Another 10-7 "upset"..if you want to call it that. Iowa over Cincinnati. (I think the Big Ten has won every game so far). Also a 9 over an 8....Oklahoma over Ole Miss....but that is not an upset. The upset is that OK blasted them by 95-72...not the tight matchup expected from an 8/9 game. The Gipper
#1 seed Virginia in trouble again to a 16 seed. Gardner-Webb ahead of them at halftime 36-30. Biggest upset so far just happened: #13 UC-Irvine beats #4 Kansas St.

The Gipper
My main interest in this tournament is that I want to see all the so called "Blue Bloods" lose and none of them make the Final Four. Kentucky, NC, Duke, Kansas. Add in maybe Villanova and UConn. At least NC and Kansas are in the same bracket, and one will have to lose. Of course, it probably will not happen. I suspect that Duke will win it all, again.

A Cinderella or two maybe but this year in particulallyr the #1 and 2 seeds are really strong. Just like football "everybody" might hate ALA, OHIO STATE, CLEM, OKL, etc, but they want to see them play.....the NFL "football factory" schools.
