I've only watched a handful of games on each if these guys, but this is how I see them as of today.

Simmons, Brown, and Oliver are top notch prospects.

Williams, Tillery, and Jones have special talent but need work.

Wilkins, Lawerence, and Davis feel like they benefited from the other talent on their lines. They feel more like rotational/role players.

I think Gary is a DE/ edge rusher

Free agents:

Grady Jarrett, DT, Falcons. Age: 26.

star.gifstar.gifstar.gifstar.gifhalfstar.gif

Grady Jarrett is one of the top 4-3 defensive tackles in the NFL. He's absolutely dominant in the interior, both as a pass rusher and a run stopper. He's turns just 26 in April, so he could continue to improve his game. He's set to earn a huge contract soon.

Sheldon Richardson, DT, Vikings. Age: 28.

star.gifstar.gifstar.gifstar.gif

Sheldon Richardson is an extremely talented defensive lineman, playing very strongly in the pass rush and run defense. He can play in both the 4-3 and 3-4, so he should garner tons of interest if he gets to the open market.

Michael Pierce (RFA), NT, Ravens. Age: 26.

Michael Pierce is an elite run-stuffer. He doesn't generate much of a pass rush, but he's not completely lost in that regard. He's also young, as he won't turn 27 until around Thanksgiving.

David Irving, DT, Cowboys. Age: 26
star.gifstar.gifstar.gif halfstar.gif
David Irving was dominant down the stretch in 2016, and he proved that wasn't a fluke the year after. He was limited to just eight games because of a concussion and a suspension, but he was terrific in those eight contests, registering seven sacks, which is a high number for a player at his position in a full 16-game slate. Irving barely played in 2018 because of injury. However, he's just 26 in August, so he should continue to improve his game.

Muhammad Wilkerson, DE/DT, Packers. Age:29
star.gifstar.gifstar.gif halfstar.gif
From 2012 to 2015, Muhammad Wilkerson was considered a top-five 3-4 defensive end. It could've even been argued that he was the second-best player at his position in the entire league, behind only J.J. Watt. Wilkerson was rewarded with a 5-year, $87 million deal in the summer of 2016. Wilkerson mailed it in after that, then was cut. Wilkerson joined the Packers and played very well for three games before suffering a season-ending injury. Wilkerson isn't 30 yet, so he could continue to play on a high level for a team that has a strong locker room.

Remember, there's no reason any FA is required to pick Cleveland even if we offer an appropriate value.  People seem to forget that on this board..

We offered more cash to Schwartz than KC but he still chose to leave.. and people viewed that as a failure of the FO even though there was nothing they could do..

Each of the FA come with questions.

Wilkerson doesn't care about football.. Pierce is basically Snacks Harrison v2.0 .. Can Irving be injury-free.. The others will be tagged

What defensive scheme will we be running next year?      4-3,     3-4   ??

They're not converting myles to.a full.time standup olb'er.....otherwise u can just trade him now cause he's off to dallas as soon as his rookie contract is up. Seeing as he's the best player on the def, im gonna predict we stay in a base 43.

Cmon man!  That was years ago! Before the 1 win in 2 years. Sounds like Schwartz had some sense at the time.

Schwartz wanted to stay here, but the front office in charge at the time low-balled him and refused to budge... by the time they did, Schwartz basically told them to go piss up a rope. Trust me, Doug Dieken brings this up on the regular.

We'd franchise him before we let that happen. But I also agree we are likely to stay 4-3.

How can anyone know....since we won't know who our DC will be?   If they do not keep Williams as HC...then everything is up in the air.

Fair to say?

Taking away interior pressure is a different animal and incredibly difficult to do as opposed to edge defenders.   When you face somebody that strong, fast, technique sound and moves all over the formation....   It's the most challenging thing for a QB because they have no pocket to step up into.   You generally have to win with either talent or adjusting your passing and running game to slow down that first step.

  • 2 weeks later...

Jeffrey Simmons, the first prospect on the list from Mississippi State, looks like an athletic force in the middle.

Derrick Brown from Auburn, who looks as much like a freak LB as he does a lineman, made some impressive plays for the Tigers:

Quinnen Williams, apparently a “the best d-lineman and top 3 draft pick “

Christian Wilkins: this guy can flat out play, and looks similar to Quinnen Williams with his size and athleticism.

Dexter Lawrence, at 6’5”, 350, is just a brick wall to insert into the lineup:
