Mary Poppins review

Mary Poppins returns
Disney
PG.                 130 min

I’m not going to spend a whole lot of time but just in case any of you still have young people around during the holiday season or if you might just be young at heart yourselves you might want to consider this sequel. And it is a sequel, not a remake. Similar to Disney’s Winnie the Pooh sequel years have passed and once innocent children are now jaded and unhappy adults.  Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw), now a widower, and his sister and children are facing eviction from  their family from their home to some unscrupulous bankers and lawyers. His spirit is nearing the breaking point when the world’s most famous nanny floats in on her magic umbrella.
A slight change in lineup Mary Poppins is played practically perfectly by Emily Blunt and the song and dance chimney sweep has been replaced with a song-and-dance lamplighter, Jack, (Lin-Manuel Miranda. )
The story is pretty basic, the family needs to save their home  and the grown-ups all have to remember what’s really important in life. As for the songs and production numbers they are magic that no one does better than Disney. No there isn’t a Chim Chim Cheree or a Spoonful of Sugar but heck this is the first time we’ve heard these songs which could easily become standards as the years roll by. Not only that  but some of the cameos are sure to bring a smile , including Angela Lansbury, Meryl Streep  and the one and only , well, you know who. If you are a huge fan of the original MARY POPPINS all I ask is that you do your best to accept the new characters and try to see it with fresh eyes. It really is a wonderful film.
