I wouldn't say a complete lack of respect but certainly a minor level across the board. Are there exceptions to every rule? Sure.

Of course any job that could be reasonably easily replaced is probably not meant to be on a very high pedestal.

WSS

But I agree with you. If a 15 year ago kid in China can do your job, you deserve to lose it. If a uneducated immigrant standing outside of home depot can fix the same thing you charge 60$ an hour to fix. Your job is "high pedestal".

Steve the "anti education" bias from you is too strong. Bordering on some kind of resentment.

The teacher bashing is just the cherry on top. Jesus

You say "well I guess there are exceptions to every rule" while simultaneously acting like an exception is a rule.

You're just spouting off claims with 0 data to back it up and then acting like we need to prove you wrong. I mean I get that's 90% of this board but come on. Have some level of common sense.

Many of the richest Americans are or were indeed dropouts. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison, Evan Williams, Michael Dell just to name a few

Forbes breaks it down, ~15% of 400 richest people in the US only have a high school diploma. For you college dropouts that means ~85% do.

No college degree: 63

Law degree: 35

Science degree: 29

PhD: 21

Medical: 5

First off, you're talking to the wrong guy, you hostile little monkey turd. If you take issue with something Steve said take it up with him. 15% by the way is not a negligible number. That's 1 in 6.25 or so.

Put that into perspective for a second. Black Americans are somewhere between 14-17% of the population.

So in your mind black people are negligible.

Nice job, racist.

Yep. Truth hurts, unless it's involving a troll that has no idea of what they are saying, they just want a reaction and attention.

That's funny that I make between master and professional degree money.

That means those degrees are toilet paper.

FYI a lot and I mean a lot of tradesmen make that kind of money.

Yep. My top CNC guy makes $30 an hour plus has access to a lot of OT. Can get to $90k+

I've seen CNC guys with CAD knowledge making $40 and hour.

I'm also between a master's and professional... so maybe those numbers are old. Or we're just in the right industry.

No one is saying you CAN'T make money without a Bachelors or higher. We're just calling out people making claims like Steve has that are blatantly anti education.

way back, years ago, there was this PHD from India. I had my two yr degree. We worked in a high tech R&D lab.I was the only programmer/analyst.

I wrote a calculations program for a very, very complex test that involved two crazy scientific really long and complex algorithms.Short version - my program calculated in about one second the right answer every time.I ened up in the VP's office, with the PHD ridiculing me for my program that kept getting the answers wrong.

He even called me an incompetent fool. So, I went up to the white board, and explained my understanding of the whole scientific test, and my interpretations of the algorithms' proper calculation process in order.

The VP got on the phone, and called an expert in the field that he knew. Turned out, I was absolutely correct, and the PHDwas completely wrong in how he calc'ed with his calculator. He went from yelling at me, to quietly apologizing. He was stunned.

After that, he took us out to a local Indian food restaurant, and he kept taking me out every so often.

The chicken drumsticks soaked in some kind of red beet brine something was really good.

I spent many years fixing code of programs that were poorly written and didn't function properly - written by bachelor of computer science degreed higher educated incompetents.

It isn't that you get a degree - it's still the innate skills that lends itself to the person being excellent in the field.

Even a stopped clock is correct at least twice a day.  I agree with  Cortez on this. There is no bigger fish representing crony capitalism than Amazon:

why, I went to college? What's your point? I'm not going to get a part in a movie because I aced my theater classes.

teaching is one of the most overrated jobs in the United States. I would wager to say that anybody on this board could teach High School with a few months of training. Maybe not stem glasses but by and large. Teachers probably work 40% less than your average worker and make about twice the average wage in Ohio. Exceptions? Yes. There are some who are dedicated and wonderful. For every one of them there are probably five that are just taking up space and probably one or two that are actual detriments to learning.

You say "well I guess there are exceptions to every rule" while simultaneously acting like an exception is a rule.

 see above

 Common Sense? Surely you jest.

letting the teachers union lead you around by the balls is not common sense.

Hey, that's the first time you posted anything resembling data. I guess that's progress. Though I'm sure you're gonna stretch exactly what political affiliation means in this case.

But posting a random slew of numbers really doesn't have anything to do with the opinion I put forth which I believe is valid. Education is fine oh, it makes some people feel better about themselves and in some cases trains a person for a career. Of course  some people tend to become arrogant  because they have a masters in something  it's not particularly useful to the real world .  I think teachers are among that group. When I was in college there were job postings all over the walls at the Student Center I can't specifically say it was most of them but it could have been that a red any degree.

"the over educated are often less successful"

... That's where a "ramdon slew of numbers" (read: evidence and data) would be very helpful.

And that was just the first claim you made. You followed up with more on your anti education kick with little to nothing to support it.

Like the one example I poste, which I think are valid. That would include teachers, many of which are required to get master's degrees just because of the benefits of the cake job they hope to get and not because more education makes them better teachers. Philosophy, sociology, women's studies, African studies Etc Majors have useless degrees. I could probably add theater Majors to that list.

I'll repeat I think everyone on this board could be trained to teach most High School classes within a few weeks.

So there lies my disrespect for their profession. Such as it is.

In order to teach something at a high level you have to learn and understand it at a high level. Again your feeling don't mean shit to anybody but yourself. Just empty assertions. Go ahead and teach some calculus to everyone here. I took three semesters of it in college and I couldn't teach it well.

Too bad you didn't take a couple of semesters of reading comprehension. If you did you would notice that I said most and I believe earlier I did not include in stem classes.

But yes in most courses you'd have to have a basic understanding of the high school level. And I don't think that's a very high bar Basically you have to know just a little bit more than the kids. Let me ask you, besides  a couple science courses  what other courses do you think you'd have  a problem brushing up on  in a few weeks?  You have your lesson plan handed to you on your first day and it doesn't change. If you don't have the aptitude for it it doesn't matter if you have a doctorate degree and English literature you won't be a good teacher.
