Clay Mathews named semi finalist for HOF

Man, he was a knucklehead, wild, undisciplined but tough. I remember a game I believe against houston he intercepted a pass (PASTORINI?) that sealed the win, then in the rin back the idiot laterled the ball to an oiler. Luckily, I think the ripped the ball back.

The Browns won and i. an ommediate post game interview, a woldly pumped up Matthews said "hey man I'm a Lakers fan and we do things wide open".......WTF?

I think he will get in. That his osspring also play may help him on the first vote. It would be nice to see another Brown in the Hall.

He excelled in every defense he was asked to play in.. Had he been in LA or NY.. He'd be voted in already... Make it happen HOF committee!

I think, correct me if I am wrong, that they are limited to actually electing 4 of the above.   There will also be  Senior category nominees, and Contributor category nominees.

If it is held to 4 max, there is not a lot of room for Clay as I think that newcomers Gonzales, Reed, and Champ Bailey will likely be first time winners.

That leaves maybe on spot for the other 22 guys on this list.

And Don Coryell....11 times a semifinalist?  They may go for him.

Correct me if I am wrong about that  4 number.

Also...I had thought that they had separated the categories into "Coaches and Contributors".  Instead it seems that they are still lumping the coaches in with the players.   (contributors I guess are commissioners, owners, GMs.)

You are correct. . .

The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s current bylaws stipulate that between four and eight new members will be selected each year. No more than five Modern-Era Finalists can be elected in a given year. Therefore, a class of six, seven, or eight can only be achieved if one or more of the Contributor and Senior Finalists are elected.

Tom Flores? WTF next, Mark Malone? Tom.Flores? Who even nominates a dud like him?

Two-time Super Bowl winning champion. Plus I think he lost one so he was in it three times   you have guys in it that didn’t win a single Super Bowl

He reminds me of a homo. Sorry, but the guy is a lightweight. Didn't he inherit Madden's great team? He had sissy hair. If I was on the HOF committee, it would be a lot tougher to get voted in.

Old timer I assume. Tony Gonzales and Ed Reed are about mortal locks to get in on the first ballot, so that leaves at most three spots for any other "modern" player to get in.

Do you when the last time someone stopped the Buffalo Bills from cake-walking the AFC in the post season?

Clay Matthews intercepted Jim Kelly at the goal line to preserve the win in a game I was lucky enough to attend from Rochester, NY at the time (which included getting there in spite of snow storm).

When Joe DeLamielleure (6 time Pro Bowl OG) was asked at a Rochester Browns Backers Banquet who was the toughest defensive player he ever faced - without hesitation he replied Clay Mathews.  He called Clay Matthews "the toughest SOB I've ever faced."  He reminded the crowd in attendance that Matthews played all 4 different LBer positions due to injuries and he excelled at every one of them.

I think it's more than a coincidence that our first round of Ozzie Newsome and Clay Matthews in 1978 was a big reason this team frequented the playoffs in the 80s more so than any other decade since the 50s.  Both guys had long careers here with a sustained level of excellence this team really needed from them.  It doesn't seem right that only 1 of them is in the Hall of Fame.  Today, when we get a good player here - we're lucky if they're still here playing at a high level 4-5 years later...  Even back then we were lucky to keep quality help much longer than 4-5 years.  Joe Thomas was an exception to the rule giving us 10 consecutive years of Pro Bowls at LT and he's going to be a 1st ballot HOF selection.

I've always said if Clay had played for the Steelers, he'd have been in long ago...

While he played 19 years and is 3rd on the all-time tackles list. He only made 4 pro bowls and was never first team all-pro. ( 1 second team all-pro)

Like most have said , he would be in already had he played for championship teams.

On the Flores thing.   I suspect that he has as much cred as a few coaches who are in:

He had 97 career wins  (Madden had 103....Tony Dungy had 139 in more seasons)

He was  8-3 in postseason play and won 2 Super Bowls........Dungy was 9-10, with 1SB.

Compare him to the other two coaching semifinalists:

Don Coryell  had 111 wins....was 3-6 in postseason....and none of his teams ever made a Super Bowl

Jimmy Johnson had 80 wins....was 13-9 in postseason play.....with 2 SB wins.

And look at these guys, two of the most successful ever:

Marty Schottenheimer,   one of only 7 coaches with 200 career wins....but was 5-13 in the postseason (clearly held against him)

Dan Reeves has  190 wins  10th best all time......took 2 different teams to the Super Bowl  4 times....but lost them all.    Should losing the SB 4 times  be held against him ?   Marv Levy is in...and he did the same   0-4.

Chuck Knox  186 career wins....no Super Bowls.

And what about Mike Holmgren and Mike Shanahan...and even Bill Cowher.  Are they considered retired, ergo HOF eligible.  I think so.  They both won or were in multiples SBs....and have more career victories than any of the three that are being considered....and more career wins than Levy, Dungy,...and a number of others already in.  Why no consideration yet for them?

And...oh, yes,  Flores was the first Hispanic  HC to win a Super Bowl.   Does/should that count?  It CERTAINLY counted for Dungy that he was a minority.

You are probably right but then like I said Dungee shouldn’t be either. He’s in because he was the first black coach to win the Super Bowl. So equity being equity shouldn’t the first Hispanic coach to win a Super Bowl not just one but 2.
