3-4 defense....

Recommended Posts

i want us to run a 43 bear front next year. We replace our LDE with a beast like margus hunt, or draft a DL like bosa or oliver. Then we have to address our LB'ing corp. Collins is likely gone. If genard can grasp coverage assignments, he could be a terror blitzing from the olb'er spot....like what mack did his first year in oakland.

Why not? The defense can’t get much worse than it has been.

Don't have the edge defenders.  Even then, most teams aren't in their base defense anyway so using terms like 34 and 43 are becoming more and more outdated.

You realize just how many fronts you can and will run in any one game, right?

I wouldn't put Avery willingly in a joker role anymore than the next nutcase.  He isn't that kind of backer.  He's a 2pt rush man that can drop on occasion.  Physically he is a James Harrison clone.     Mack was moved all over his first year but primarily is and will always been an edge defender/pass rusher.  Anything less isn't using his abilities to their potential.

But that’s not Dorsey’s mo, he builds teams and if comes to addition but subtraction it’s probably the right move.

yes....but i want the base defense to be 2 large immovable objects in the middle and 2 slightly smaller immovable objects on the edges....lol

look, our defense needs "depth", not a scheme change. The rams defense dropped 45 pts to the saints today.....look at what our def did against the saints early in the season when they were fresh and had no injuries.

whats happening now is "exactly" why i was furious with dorsey for his preseason moves that gutted key depth at DL and DE. The only guy thst sees any meaningful time on the field that we picked up late is zettel.....and he sucks.

This is idiotic.

We played the best offense in the league, holding them to their average number of points, missing our #1 CB, #2 CB, #3 CB, #1 FS, #1 LB, #2 LB....

But that wasn't good enough so now we should run an entirely different scheme that we don't have the personnel for.... Smh

Haha man this isn’t the first time our defense was bad this year.

I just remember the Browns 3-4 teams in the passed just always seemed tougher.

I the clevefan was right that depth is the real issue.

I’ve just never been a 4-3 fan. Especially with how bad we get beat to the edge.

a proper 4-3 staffed with right proper 43 kunts is "usually" going to have better edge protection than a 3-4 defense that has smaller lighter OLB'ers holding the edge.

Most people dont want to beleive this but losing nassib was huge on edge protection. Right now our starters have to be in there so much that by the endvof the game they start to lose edge containment, which is dirty heavy work. Losing a rotational talent like nassib who would be spelling the DE's on both sides alot more than they're getting now, was huge...no question about it. Everything i thought would happen when i read meder and nassib were sent off...is coming true. Our depth guys are such a liability right now that the starters have to play most of the game.....

I like having more speed out there, and coverage ability, and ability to disguise, which the 3-4 seems to present which is essential in the NFL today.

The 4-3 seems vanilla to me. Maybe we need DOMINANT lineman across the board and we just don’t have them.

I just don’t know if Ogbah has many any plays this year. I’ve barely heard his name called. I think it’s just too much youth on an already banged up defense.

yeah ogbah had some flashes a few games ago but now is quiet again. The only qb pressure from the left comes from Genard...and he's that situational specialist "usually" set aside for the blind side...but that's Myles side. Im starting to wonder if we shouldn't tell myles next year to put 5-10 lbs on and have him rotate from side to side more. It seems he needs a bit more weight out there to power edge rush more. Since we don't have anybody else bringing consistent pressure, it's all on him...and he's having to speed rush more because we're getting depleted in the secondary. The big surprise to me is the disappearance of ogunjobi. Not hearing his name called whatsoever anymore. Our interior DL is almost nonexistent in getting penetration and is getting gashed in the run. I heard one DL called today, Coley. And on a mild play at that.

I loved what we had last year. I really thought Shelton, Meder and Ogun plus maybe a surprise in Brantley..was going to be the best DL rotation in football. I didn't like it but I was ok with Shelton getting traded. The loss of meder and Brantley as well had me dumbfounded. We got rid of so much rotational depth and brought in guys a week before opening day. We essentially torpedoed the front 7 that looked "really" good against the eagles in preseason. I dont' understand how you look at the eagles game and say "this won't do". I don't get it.

What do they all have in common? They are the best Defenses in football history and they were all a 4-3 base Defense.

We don’t have the personnel at the moment but maybe in the future we will have a great 4-3 defense.

I’d think a stud free safety and a more developed version of the linebackers/defensive line would make me or anyone more convinced in our scheme.

Schobert is gonna be great, Kirksey does well in the middle.I think they’d work nicely in the 3-4 together. That would be some nice coverage ability in the middle of the field.

I recall our 3-4 defense will D’Quell Jackson being pretty solid. Especially with how bad the offense usually was.

ravens were 3-4 tho right? they had sam adams and tony siragusa up the middle which is what made that defense work.....yes, i know ray lewis was a raven. Those two monster 2 gappers let ray track the ball carriers through that line....

imo a very good 43 def is easier to assemble than a 34. U need too many special guys to run a great 34. The SF def when they went to the SB is one of my fav defenses if all time and they're a 34. But they had patrick willis and navarro bowman as ilb'ers. Ahmad brooks and aldon smith as tbe olb'ers.....and the best 5 tech in the league at the time in justin smith. Just a stupidly stacked front 7. They also had a pretty good NT but i cant rem his name right now.

i really wish we hadnt gotten rid of shelton and meder. Our interior rotation of those two and ogunjobi would have been world bearers to go along with myles on the outside. That would have covered for our deficiency at LDE.

the 2 years under shurmur when we ran a 43 with DQ as the mlb and sheard at DE was the most promising defense we had since the very early 2000's when jamir miller was here. That was a 3-4, but after tgat every 34 we ran sucked wholeass

That was a solid defense.  A lot of veterans on it too, though.. and sheard was a very solid player.

I just remember the 3-4 defense would bend a lot but not break, even good teams would have some drives and end up settling for FGs a lot.

I like the schemes that employ both 3-4 and 4-3, considering some teams have better personnel for one or the other.. And injuries can change a game plan defensively.

It didn't work because you need stud LBs for a 3-4.... Browns didn't have any and didn't draft any.

We wanted QBs.

No, it wasn't....it was pretty lame.  DQJ was lame.  He made a ton of tackles though.....all 6-8-10 yards down the field.

I like peppers at SS. But he only had 1 INT in college... He can HIT and has great tackling ability. Seems like more of an SS. D Randall has been the free safety, he does have decent ball skills; but isn’t an elite FS. Imagine if we had Earl Thomas?..... Cleveland would love Earl Thomas.

DQ was lame? He was the best tackler at the LB position we’ve had. Too bad the rest of the team was usually bad.

Anyway, bend what don’t break was my point, the defense breaks, a lot. And is pretty bad in the red zone.

The Titans, Ravens, Bears, Texans, are among the leaders in fewest big plays. Browns? Second to worst.

Here is a stat that confirms the 3-4 is legit:

Nobody on the defense had the talent to tackle J Lewis. The ravens were always good and probably had above average oLine too.

I’m talking scheme fits with personnel. The DLine has under performed.

The linebackers(when healthy) would do nicely with there speed and athleticism.

Collins - Schobert - Kirksey - Avery

Garrett  -   Coley   -    Ogunjobi

(Ogbah rotating in)

edit: or have Myles on the edge standing up rushing, and Ogbah as other defensive end.
