THE BROWNS BOARD

Main rivals (Derby Match) grudge match

Recommended Posts

This is my first full season following the NFL and the Browns. I am a big soccer fan and have spent a lot of money over the years watching my soccer team Everton.

Our biggest rival is Liverpool as we are both from the same city and the stadiums are separated by a big park.

The nerves start over 2 weeks before the game and it is pure hatred between the two for 90minutes. After that they are your work collegues friends and some times family members.

Keen to know the difference with NFL and the grudge match vs the Steelers.

What is the rivalry like. Is it hatred on both sides.

Has anything happened to heighten the hatred?

To put it simply, biggest rivalries are with Division rivals: Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals.

The Bengals is from Ohio too and was founded by Paul Brown, who founded the Browns to later get kicked of the team.

Baltimore Ravens was founded after the owner of the then Browns, who was a scammer, decided to move the team to Baltimore in 1995. They have won 2 Superbowls.

Pittsburgh Steelers is one of the historically top teams of the Superbowl era, and their area of influence even gets into Ohio.

It's not pretty around here, this team has lived way too many tough times lately. But these fans have toughen their hearts around their team and know a lot of football.

Enjoy the ride ;)

  1. We've been down so long that Steeler fans do not consider us rivals at present and for some time now. But as we improve they'll revert.
  2. PTG had a player named James Harrrison. He knocked two of our players senseless a few years ago in the same game with helmet to helmet shots. The man had a neck like a tree trunk. I don't remember us doing too much recently to stoke any hatred, but there is this oldie...

The PTG QB in the clip is HOF'er, Terry Bradshaw.

Anyone old enough to remember going to Steelers/Browns games in the 70s and 80s can tell you that the action on the field was tame in comparison to what happened between the rival fans in the stands at old Cleveland Stadium.

I am a Brit living in USA  ....... Man City fan ( from Manchester so I have to be ) for 48 years since I was 5 ......Browns fan since the mid 80s ...... rivalry here is intense but rarely has it got to the heights in UK of throwing bottles at arriving opposition team buses etc or smashing up store fronts

Just a few  additions or corrections:

A. The Browns/Steelers rivalry is the oldest in the AFC.....but that is because it predates the creation of the AFL/AFC.  The two teams agreed to switch conferences together after the 1970 merger with the AFL was finalized.  These two, along with the then Baltimore (nka Indianapolis) Colts went to the AFC from the NFC in order to even up the number of teams in each conference.

B. The Browns dominated the rivalry by far for the first 20+ years.   And while the Squealers started taking  control in the mid 1970s, it took the Browns massive failures since 1999 to have the Steelers gain the advantage in the W/L column.

C. The Steeler ARE the only team in the division that cannot be said to be a bastard stepchild of the Browns.  The other two teams were formed from the remnants of the Browns out of fear, greed, jealousy, ineptitude,  and bile.    Paul Brown, essentially the founder of the Browns.....but NOT its owner, was fired by Art Modell,  because Modell's ego could not allow having  another personality dominate the team that he owned.  This happened in 1962.  (Browns had been founded in 1946).  The Bengals were formed and began play in 1968....and Paul Brown WAS awarded ownership of that franchise, and today his son still owns it.  As for Modell, whether you want to call him a scammer or not, he became a dinosaur, in that he actually put little of his own money into the team when he bought it, and he was always having to borrow and leverage the team to keep his finances afloat.  Finally,  the City of Baltimore came along and offered him a huge pile of cash  ($75 million)  to move his team to that town.    Contrary to the belief of some.....who refuse to acknowledge the actual facts, the Browns franchise NEVER left Cleveland.   A new franchise was formed, and Modell was granted ownership of that franchise, while the Browns franchise went on hiatus for a 3 year period while held in trust by the league until it could be sold (which it was to a Mr. Al Lerner, who won the bid).

D. The Steelers franchise pre-dates the Browns. They were formed in 1933, the Browns in 1946.    The Browns alone have won 8 championships, and the Steelers 6.  But that is not the whole story.   Cleveland and Northeast Ohio actually have a total of 13  Pro football championships.   That is because, among other reasons, the NFL was founded here in Northeast Ohio, in Canton, in 1920.  There were several franchises here that won NFL titles in those early years, among them the Akron Pros who won the very first NFL Championship in 1920, plus the Canton Bulldogs, and the Cleveland Bulldogs, who combined won 3 NFL championships.  In addition....later there was an NFL team here known as the Cleveland Rams.....who today are the Los Angeles Rams.  This Rams franchise won the NFL title, while here in Cleveland, in 1945.  The Pros and the Bulldogs went defunct (as did all but two of the current NFL franchises, the only ones still in existence from the inaugural 1920 season are the Chicago Bears, and the Arizona Cardinals....each of which franchises actually did move at least once...and the Cards 3 times.

E.  While, yes, the Steelers have some fans in Ohio, these are what we call around here FRAKs....FrontRunnerAssKissers.  Their fandom is for sale to whichever team is winning.  And the Steelers may have the most of those in America....challenged only by the Dallas Cowboys perhaps for that honor, and or the likes of the NY Yankees in other sports.   When the Steelers start to go south, these fans will glom on to some other winning team.

Not today.....but as noted, back in the 70s/80s, it absolutely was that intense.  While maybe no team buses were attacked, or store fronts smashed (why would we smash up our own towns stores?).....the fighting was intense.

And FYI,   just so you know....Steeler fans are the single most stupid fan base in the nation.  Its true.    They are so stupid to think that THEY are the reason for their teams success..   I have heard this expressed on several occasions.   They say the "We", the fans are the reason the team has been good.  Which of course is incredibly ignorant.  The team has been good because of the plans set in place by their ownership, by the ability of their General Managers to execute those plans, and by the talents of the players and coaches who coach and play.   Their fans do not have a cabbage fart to do with their success.  In fact, if the intellect of the fan base were a factor, that team would have been the biggest losers on the planet going on decades now.  But many of them are so stupid to think otherwise.   (not all.....some that come here know this)

No I meant opposition fans would smash up the towns they were visiting

I don't know if that has ever happened here.   Remember, our cops carry guns, unlike yours, so if some Steeler gear wearing arsewipe tried to break shite up in Cleveland, he could be looking down  at the business of a M4....or whatever weapon Cleveland cops carry.  Maybe our gun experts on here can tell you what they would have:

While on duty, an officer will carry or have under his/her control, only Department authorized weapons and ammunition. Personnel will carry the firearm as directed in Procedure 12.020, Uniforms, Related Equipment, and Personal Grooming. The use of a weapon mounted light for the Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm semi automatic pistol is optional. An officer who chooses to use a weapon mounted light is responsible for its purchase, cost of repairs, and maintenance. The Rangemaster will inspect all weapon mounted lights for safety and compliance with this procedure and Procedure 12.020, Uniforms, Related Equipment, and Personal Grooming. Officers wishing to use a weapon mounted light must attend a two hour training session given by the FTS. An optional backup handgun provides an officer with a backup firearm in the event his/her primary sidearm is unavailable or circumstances reasonably preclude or restrict its use. The carrying of a backup handgun is permitted when an officer is working in a uniform or in plain clothes law enforcement capacity. Only one backup handgun may be carried. An officer who carries a backup handgun is responsible for its purchase, cost of repairs, maintenance, and ammunition. The backup handgun will not have an operational laser sighting system. It will not be carried in a law enforcement capacity unless approved by the FTS. Officers must annually complete an Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy approved qualification course with their backup handgun. The FTS will conduct training sessions on a quarterly basis for officers wishing to carry a backup handgun.

Clearly not as intense these days with the fans but the heritage and rivalry seems similar to the UK and our football.

Certain team fans get escorted in to stadiums to stop or eradicate fighting.

I've drove through the street Everton vs Manchester United and had to stop as theirs fighting between rival fans on the road.

Our rivals Liverpool are scum and we sit below them at Enfield. Once they throw coins down at us and pissed in cups throwing them on us. Sock I know but Liverpool fans are the sickest and thickest fans in football/soccer

They bang on about how successful they are and have a right to win things. Yet they haven't won the league since 1990.

If I have a UK soccer team...it is Liverpool.    It was my uncles team when he was alive.    (and, oh, yea, as far as I know, homeboy LeBron still owns a piece of it.)

And, oh, yea, too much soccer talk and this thread will be relegated to the Barber Shop.  (perhaps like your team?)  So piss on futbol, talk football.

Since the Browns play the Jets tonight, a little history. Anyone old enough to remember will tell you one of the greatest Browns wins was the double over time game against the Jets in 1986.

It was looking hopeless in the 4th quarter, Browns fans were leaving, Jets fans were celebrating, (they forgot beer flows downhill). Then Bernie Kosar engineered one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history. I still remember seeing fans running back into the stadium when they heard what was happening.
