The Gipper
Now that the NBA and NHL championships have been played , here is the last year that each of the now 49 major league cities (or market areas) in the US and Canada won a professional sports championship, or for those markets with no titles, the year they first had a major sportsfranchise there. In other words, it tells how long each area has been waiting for a title. The Gipper
Notes: Washington DC had been down in the lower third in terms of longest to wait for a title....they had not won since the Redskins won the 1991 Super Bowl. They, along with the Minnesota area had waited the longest among cities that had teams in all 4 major sports: NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA. Now, Minnesota stands alone with longest wait for towns with all 4 sports. Among cities with teams in 3 major sports, Toronto now waits the longest, since 1993 (I do not count the CFL as a major sport) Buffalo waits the longest with 2 teams in major sports....1965 And, of course, Vancouver....with its last title in a major sport in 1915. (again...not counting CFL) Among American cities, San Diego has the longest wait. And note about SD: it once had teams in 3 major sports: NBA (Clipper), NFL (Chargers), MLB (Padres). Now they are down to just one team, the Padres. (who, I believe, are in last place...again)
The Gipper
And OH Canada. No Canadian team has won a title in any sport in 25 years and running now. The last was the Toronto Blue Jays World Series in 1993, and the same year the Montreal Canadiennes won the Stanley Cup. Of course, at this point Canada has only 1 team in the MLB and one team in the NBA (and no NFL)....but the hockey history lately is bad news for the Great White North.
