THE BROWNS BOARD

What's Up with the Baltimore Blowfest?

As I watched Mike Mayock's FAVORITE QB (he didn't have the balls to put first on his Top 5 QB list) get drafted, I saw a lot of truth swept under the rug to sweeten the story.  The NFL Channel reported all the way up to the draft that Lamar's agent (who is also his mom) wasn't answering/returning calls from several teams that wanted to invite him for a visit.  If that wasn't troublesome enough - there's the part where he still needs his mom who has zero experience as a player agent reading NFL contract jargon.  I'd like to be the fly on the wall when they have to explain to Momma Jack why the goofey looking white QB her son needs to upgrade will be making way more money than her son.  Judging by the trend on the phone - she already has trust issues so it's a good thing a GM of the same race has do the splainin.

Anyway, it felt like the ONLY angle the NFL Channel wanted on draft night was Baltimore GM Ozzie Newsome was the only person interested in this poor kid all other teams just didn't want to bring in to play QB. If they slipped it all in during the 5 minutes I took a power dump - my bad. After Ozzie drafted someone else at #30 the NFL Channel is showing the frustrated prospect only lacking the 70s lyrics and sound of Bonnie Tyler's "I need a hero."   Just 2 picks later (the final pick of the 1st round/1st night) here comes the NFL Channel's version of Lancelot (Ozzie) trading up just in time for Jackson to be a 1st round draft pick.  Baltimore was now the only NFL team wasn't going to stereotype Jackson out of his life-long dream as the the 1 GM that will be retiring after the 2018 season anyway made it happen.  Then again, I'm guessing the competitor at ESPN hosted by rabid Ratbird fan Mel Kiper wanted the same happily ever after closing to the 1st round. That might have gotten creepier than Ghoolie standing naked in front of his Terry Bradshaw poster and Big Ben Fathead...

And 1 night later - how about the refreshing new way to view Orlando Brown after he got shamed right out of Indy with the narrative escort of the media source covering it?   If we would have taken him - it would have been "did anyone in Cleveland see that kid's combine?  He's definitely NOT his dad especially in his willingness to work at it in the offseason!"  Since Ozzie took him - not only is he a steal but what a wonderful story!  Only now is it appropriate to remind people that the levers of a 6'8" man won't ever be favorable on the bench press; so make sure you count film way more in this one.  If memory serves me right, didn't Baker Mayfield already clarify Orlando Brown never gave up a sack in his interview at the Combines?  His skill set isn't all that similar to his dad's though. His dad was a powerful RT that was an ideal run blocker the first time he was here.   We took a lot of teams like the Cowboys and Eagles by surprise when we pounded Leroy Hoard right through the strength of their playoff contending/star studded fronts in route to an 11-5 season.  BNI reported when Zeus was about to put 800 lbs on his upper back to the chorus of cheers from teammates - Belichick came in and shut it down telling him he didn't need to prove what was already obvious.

Polish was correct about the guy but the new Liberal NFL needed their round 1 Quotaback at all costs so Ozzie Newsome, the most overrated GM in history made it happen.

I wish we had an overrated GM who would take us to 2 SB rings.

Who said Ozzie was overrated?

Maybe the guy I quoted on my post?

You know ,the kind of guy who labels as "overrated" a GM that got 2 SB rings in 10 years and constant playoff appearances with the different rosters he had to arrange during that tenure.

 Alright quick trigger -  I already retracted my reply to you while you were prolly replying.  Believe it or not, I DID notice just in time or so I thought.

Am I all alone with the heebeegeebees the NFL Channel was making out of the Lamar Jackson at #32?

Come on Gips with the echo.  Give the guy a break for hating the Division Rival.  There was a time our fanbase hung together with ball-busting the enemy at all costs.  Loved Ozzie when he was here and I'm willing to adore him again the day he leaves the Rathouse.

No, Gip is right. This guy seems to revel in his ignorance.

You also enjoy his subtle racism? His "It's so hard to be a white man today" nonsense? You cool with that too?

I’ll give a take on the OP. I admit l did not see the NFL network coverage you mention, so just trying to comment on the post.

I take for granted any news outlet that is married to all things NFL is going to try to find the story within a story. The draft is a highlight of the offseason, so they gotta milk it, spin it, and simply find something to talk about to hold people’s interest for as long as they can.

Based on your explanation I can’t tell how overtly racially motivated the story was, but as you can tell here, it gets reactions, and for better or worse, that’s what news tries to do.

Hey, they just latch onto a story and run with it. Ravens only traded up into the first to get Jackson to ensure the 5th year option, nothing more than that. Same thing with Teddy B a few year back. That the Ravens drafted Lamar is a good thing in my book, because he has all the makings of RG IV. That teams wanted him to do the WR drills at the Combine should tell you what some GMs thought what his preferred position in the NFL should be.

Don't get me as mocking the ADA, I'm glad Shaquem Griffin got drafted, but he got more air time than all the other 5th round picks combined.

Dude, you were the one who told us Phil Sewage was the genius behind Baltimore's success. YOu have a problem with Ozzie, but he is a better executive than anyone the Browns have ever had. 2 SB rings. End of debate.

I don't think Ozzie was as good of an executive as Paul Brown

Have you ever used a cut and paste in any of your countless accusations of things you wished people have said?  I'm still waiting, it's only been 20 years of the same ole same ole. I just had a rip snortin riot sticking our 10-6 record and your Joe Thomas is gonna be an epic bust up your butt in his rookie year (2007). I didn't realize you still had asss bleed from it in 2018 but you haven't stopped trying to get me back for it.  I couldn't be more flattered. Even better, you're still trying to convince yourself 10 consecutive Pro Bowls for a Left Tackle is a horrible pick while Paxton Lynch is a Football Messiah. You're still the only troll on this board that ever had to call up Stan and tell him Zombo is playing too rough for you.  All of a sudden, look who got to post again.  That's so adorable!

Even on this response, you finally used cut and paste which could have been epic progress if you actually read what you cut and pasted.  Not your agenda though and never has been. My problem isn't with Ozzie. It's with the people that are blowing him up into a Superhero for taking a QB talented enough for 1st round consideration at #32 overall.

The reason I wrote the post was because all the way up to the draft, the NFL Channel was reporting Jackson's mom wasn't answering calls or returning them from teams that left messages and wanted him to come for a visit. This was AFTER they established in public Lamar only wants to play QB.   Employees (former players of color) on the NFL Channel that were reporting this said Lamar was getting bad advice (his mom is his agent).   The red light his mom gave some teams even allowed a team that was interested to take another player in round 1 before a 1st round QB in their eyes right?  On the night of the draft, nobody brought it up while he waited and waited until the NFL Channel crowned Ozzie a hero from the trade up.  I think his mother was being racially selective with her trust when I read Marvin Lewis and Cincy FO took him out to dinner and he also met with Baltimore so I didn't like seeing the way it was playing out. Any agent representing a kid like Lamar should have been aware teams/FOs like Dallas, Carolina, Houston have drafted QBs of Color and found ways to make them productive early on. Then again, I am wasting this point on someone that can't wait to call every QB of color he sees a "Black Fran Tarkenton."

FWIW, I found this thread getting racially heated and that's my bad.  It shouldn't have taken Dutch and Nero to point this out to me but I'm glad they did. Just my opinion, it seems like a GIGANTIC conflict of interest to be a huge Pro Football fan or one of this franchise, in particular; if you have issues with men of color.  NFL Channel blowing Baltimore (per carefully selected Heading) was my issue.  I didn't see any of the same "WOW, look how long it took to draft Mason Rudolph" from a guy who never won less than 10 games in the last 3 years starting with all 3 completion percentages exceeding 62.  Weren't both guys tied for Mayock's #5 ranking at least allegedly and in print?  But which one had the bigger story juice waiting?  If they would have reminded people Lamar's agent refused the interest of teams that were calling - it's a buzz kill on the heart warming story they wanted to close the 1st round with.  The risk/reward of it all still came from the 1 GM that is retiring at the end of 2018.

The move got them that 5th year option which could pay off huge for taking a developmental QB.

Safe bet that various scenarios have been fleshed out by OZ and his staff including the incoming GM, Eric DeCosta, who has been waiting in the wings for years.

If Jackson's 2018 progress is slow they can always extend or franchise tag Flacco.

Excellent points Tour!  They also added RG3 in case progress is slow or if Jackson needs a similar system fit backup QB.  I still see a lot of Bill Belichick in Ozzie's approach to the draft...
