One of the big buzz issues in the Sotomayor debate is how Hipanics will view one party's opposition or support of a Latino. I wonder if all Latinos think of themselves as homogenous dark skinned Spanish speaking people or if Mexicans, Puerto Rican, Cubans, Dominican etc think of themselves as different entities? One one hand, it is good to identify and be proud of your heritage, whatever that heritage is... but to put that above being an American seems terribly racist, especially when people "act out" and make judgements legal and common, against other heritages in favor of their own. And that, is the serious question about Sotomayor, with her serious involvement in Hispanic activist orgs. We're all Americans, but to put one's heritage before all others seems to be un-American. Mexicans dont look at puerta ricans or cubans the same and the languages are slightly different anyways. However "hispanics" will lump togeather against other non hispanics.... etc. I think as an electorate they hold very similar views and concerns and function basically as one block (exception of the Florida Cubans).
