The fans fund what they want to fund. "We need you to pay the kid's salaries in perpuity" isn't all that appealing.

That said. As they said at the Tuscaloosa airport when Nick Saban arrived: GOD IS GOOD, WE GOT JIMBO!!!

And the insane arms race in college football continues.........

https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/college-sports/collegesports/2017/12/01/aggies-get-75-million-dollar-man-jimbo-fisher-excuses-am-meet-expectations

Aggies get their $75 million-dollar man in Jimbo Fisher; no excuses if A&M can't meet expectations

The last time the Aggies hired a football coach of Jimbo Fisher's stature, the new man said he'd settle for what Texas A&M's president was making: $15,000. The middle man nervously relayed Bear Bryant's demand to the chairman of the Board of Regents, worried it might make the president angry.

"Maybe," the chairman replied, "the president ought to go to coaching."

Jimbo will make more than A&M's president or the president of France or the combined salaries of the free world's leaders, for that matter. If reports are to be believed, it comes to 10 years and $75 million, which should tell you why a man would leave Florida State, where he won a national championship just four short years ago.

And it should also tell you about the expectations in College Station. The ante, you might say, has been upped.

Kevin Sumlin's annual eight-win season wasn't enough. Jimbo averaged 10 in Tallahassee, which sounds about right.

If he can maintain his career average at A&M and throw a scare every once in a while in his old boss, Nick Saban, he'll keep the likes of Tony Buzbee happy.

And if he outlasts Saban, who's 14 years his senior, well, then, who knows what the ceiling is?

Because, let's face it, A&M hasn't exactly overachieved in the last 70 or so years. Precious few remain who can recall firsthand what it was like when A&M won its last national title, in 1939. The Bear came close in his brief four-year run, before Mama called him home to Alabama. His Aggies went 9-0-1 in '56 but were ineligible for a bowl because of NCAA sanctions. The next year, his last at A&M, the Houston Post broke the story that he was leaving, and the Aggies subsequently lost their last three games. To the day he died, Bryant claimed that blasted, bald-headed Post reporter cost him a national title in '57.

The Aggies have had 10 football coaches since the Bear, if you don't count the interims, and it hasn't been a glorious line of succession.........CONTINUED IN LINK. .......

Obviously this is all about the money, for, from a prestigeand competitive  standpoint, TAMU is not in the same league as FSU, historically.

And as for Fisher....tell me what he did to elevate FSU?   Quite the opposite.  The program went downhill when he took over for Bobby Bowden. How can anyone really expect him to be any better than Sumlin?

And notice this:  Bobby Bowden's son,  Terry, is coaching today in the MAC title game.

Dynasties or even perennially good teams can be fickle things even look at schools like Texas, SMU (after getting nuked) and others. Plus with the modern lower scholarship numbers and amazing parity it's just hart to win every year Ohio State University has done a great job......and some still bytch about them.

And when the big boosters want results now well the payday arms race keeps going!

If telling the simple truth is trolling, so be it.  Compare what  FSU has done on the national stage compared to TAMU  for the last  50 years.

Here is A&M:

Top 25 poll finishes

The Aggies have finished in the final season rankings of the AP Poll and Coaches Poll 26 times. The AP Poll first appeared in 1934, and has been published continuously since 1936. The Coaches Poll began its ranking with 20 teams in 1950–51 season, but expanded to 25 teams beginning in the 1990–91 season.[172]

A stipend especially a needs based one for D-1A absolutely and with some adjustments for smaller schools and AD budgets, now there will be some discussion about things like Title IX and other issues but something can be worked out, it's 2017 not 1950.

The P5 D-1A coaches and even some million dollar assistants salaries are proof enough.

I'm not arguing against the premise that FSU is better than A&M historically. It's A. the irrelevance of the point right now, B. the fact that such a troll was completely expected from you and C. that almost every single other premise in your post was wrong.

FSU's 1987-2000 run very similar to the Tressel/Meyer run at OHIO STATE.

Our best shot was 1975 but some idiot had scheduled Ark. up there the week after beating our hated rivals Texas Thanksgiving week. We were 10-0 but got jinxed by making the Sports Illustrated cover and came out flat as pancakes. Such a shame for a defense that provided 10 NFL starters from the starting 11.

We have until I'm 80 to  make something out of this $75mil investment against the best division in college ball, SEC West. My dad was a freshman @ A&M when we won the last NC in 1939. Bear had us right there in 1957 until the cat got out of the bag that he was leaving for Bama. Lost the next two and the bowl by a total of 6 points. Crushing to say the least.

EDIT: As for Jimbo---he will either make us competitive or he will turn into another expensive pumpkin like Franchione. Flip a coin.

EDIT #2: Sumlin may not have been all that good, but damn 2012 with JFF was one magical year to watch. Especially the night he got off the turf against Mizzou, put on a knee brace and tore them apart to win the Heisman. I was right above him on the 2nd level while he laid there in agony with the crowd chanting "Johnny, Johnny, Johnny". What a night to  remember!

The ONLY premises in my post were:

A.   FSU has been better historically than TAMU, and

B.  Fisher went to TAMU for the money.

C.  Fisher did not maintain FSU at the same level of performance as Bobby Bowden.

So...explain which of these premises is wrong...and why?

Just what I said. B and C. He went for alot more than the money, if by money you are referring to his personal salary. He's said as much and it's pretty obvious when you evaluate the situation.

Fisher was better than Bowden at the end of the latter's career. They forced Bowden out because he was slipping. Jimbo came in, revived things, and won the national championship in year 4. 4 top 10 finishes. 5 top 15 finishes. 6 top 20 finishes. Finished ranked every single year. Yeah you're right. What a loser.

OK, Bobby was 90 years old.  So sure, he was going to slip.  But his team finished in the Top 5 in 14 consecutive years.  Fisher's teams finished in the Top 5 just once.

So....again.....where am I inaccurate when I say:   He went for the money....and FSU has historically been a much better program than A&M..

Of course he went for the money.. $75 mil before endorsements? State of the art facility? Word out of Tallahassee is they wouldn't build him a facility on a level of Clemson's but A&M already has one that's close in place.. Supposedly that was huge as well.

It's never just for the money at this level -but- money is a big motivator. These guys are already very well off football guys.

He didn't go to A&M for the money of his salary alone (see Axe's post).

Bowden didn't finish in the top 5 a single time in his last 10 years. 3 of his last 4 years he finished unranked.

FSU has historically been a much better program than A&M. Not disputing that. Already said that. Jimbo did not leave for his own personal salary though, and Fisher was an improvement over Bowden at the time he stepped in.

Largely true, Bowden and FSU had their great run back in "PRIMETIME" 1987-2000

1976–2009 Bobby Bowden 34 304–97–4^ .756 111–27^ .804
2010–2017 Jimbo Fisher 8 83–23 .783 48–16 .750
2017 Odell Haggins Interim 1–0 1.000 0–0
2018–future Willie Taggart 0 0–0 0–0
Totals 11 coaches 71 seasons 538–250–17 .679 159–43 .787

^ Bobby Bowden's record does not include 12 wins that were vacated that would otherwise make his record 316–97–4, including 6 conference wins that would otherwise make his conference record 117-27.

......Also don't underestimate Deion Sanders' contribution in turning  the FSU and Bowden's success around!

Under head coach Bobby Bowden, Sanders was a two-time consensus All-American cornerback in 1987 and 1988, and a third team All-American in 1986, intercepting 14 passes in his career, including three in bowl games, and managed to return one interception 100 yards for a touchdown breaking Fred Biletnikoff's interception return record by one yard. He won the Jim Thorpe Award in 1988. He was also a standout punt returner for Florida State, leading the nation in 1988 with his punt return average, and breaking the school's record for career punt return yards. Sanders made an interception with 5 seconds left to seal Florida State's 13-7 win over Auburn in the 1989 Sugar Bowl, during the 1988 postseason. Based on those accolades, his jersey at Florida State, #2, was retired in 1995. He finished his career with 126 punt returns for 1,429 yards.[5] Bowden would later state that Sanders was his "measuring stick for athletic ability".[6]

Yes...Bobby was over the hill....probably should have been gone long before that, so saying that Fisher was better than him is like saying he is better than a fossil.

And he left for the money.   Congratulations...your alma mater has fuyucked up priorities.

Jumbo in 8 seasons did have a better career winning percentage than Bobby Bo.

2010–2017 Jimbo Fisher 8 83–23

.783

And these top college coaches make an obscene amount of money now these moves are generally about other things like change of scenery, control, whatever. Even mid and lower coaches can make six or seven digit salaries.

It's only about the money in movies........... or court.

Personal salary yes, but also money for assistants and facilities. FSU's AD even came out and blatantly said that they couldn't offer what A&M was offering either in salary or in resources.

Ohio State pays Urban $6M a year. They've paid him more than we've paid our coach every single year he's been there. I could've said the same thing to you, but I'm not stupid, and I know Ohio State is a good school just like A&M.

You know who raves on and on about priorities and such? Michigan fans.
