Putin is not necessarily a good guy (ex KGB and more), but he is anti DS (actually his #1 enemy).

 

Putin has issues with Russian Mafia, which may be why he's not as infuriated by our sanctions as he should be (sanctions primarily target Russian Mafia interests).

 

POTUS / Putin may be working together vs DS - beyond that there is probably a lot of work to do.

 

China is another story, and I believe are our #1 adversary, Russia is #2 at best, and possibly #3.
