When the news camera shines its light on somebody they feel a thrill all of a sudden their life has meaning. People flock around them hanging on every word they have to say oh, not because they care but because they are now part of the show. A little bit f ucked up? Probably but not uncommon. Probably related to Munchausen by proxy in some way. Of course, and you should know this, when this kind of stuff happens people regularly get paid, and paid well, to tell their story. But if you are a nobody doing Taco Bell commercials as an extra with no lines, fishing for a book deal out of the crisis would not be unheard of.
