ORTIZ | USA TODAY HOUSTON – In reaching the World Series for just the second time in their 56-year history, the Houston Astros set up the first championship matchup pitting two 100-game-winning teams since 1970. That seems appealing enough, except there’s virtually no history between the Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers, who have never met in the Fall Classic and only once before in the postseason. So there won’t be any history to hash over, no old scores to settle between teams that used to share a city, as would have been the case if the Dodgers faced the New York Yankees in the World Series for a 12th time. Baseball will just have to settle for a clash of the best clubs in their respective leagues. The Astros made sure of that by dispatching the Yankees 4-0 in Saturday’s Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, and they couldn’t care less what the suits think. “We know Major League Baseball wanted the Yankees and Dodgers,’’ said Dallas Keuchel, who will start Game 1 for Houston. “There was no bones about it. The festivities of Game 2 of the World Series started with Vin Scully inviting Fernando Valenzuela to throw out the first pitch and ended with Chris Devenski striking out Yasiel Puig in a nine-pitch battle to give the Houston Astros a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in 11 innings. The rest of the game was so completely insane and ridiculous that you wouldn't believe what happened if you didn't watch it. Here's what went down. (and no I didn't stay up to watch it) Around the eighth A grass fire breaks out in the vicinity of Dodger Stadium. Separately, an apartment fire in nearby Echo Park also started. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded on the ground and in the air........ .....??.....This made the Astros just the second team in World Series history to hit a tying home run in the ninth and go-ahead homer in the 10th (the first was the 2001 Yankees). Score: Astros 5, Dodgers 3 Astros' win expectancy: 93.5 percent Sometime in the 10th A fan leaps into the Astros' bullpen. Brad PeaSock: "I didn't know what was going on until it was over. The security guards came in and got the guy. I saw him get led away in handcuffs. I don't know what he was doing. I think he was going after the security guard. He wasn't coming after us." Collin McHugh: "The game was crazy. It was back and forth, one of the craziest games I've ever been a part of, so why not throw that in there too?"......... Bottom of the 11th The Dodgers weren't done, not on this night. Charlie Culberson, who entered the game as a sub, homered with two outs off Devenski and pumped his arm as he rounded second base. Keuchel: "Culberson acted like he won the World Series." Score: Astros 7, Dodgers 6 Astros' win expectancy: 97.8 percent .........It was the first World Series win in Astros history. Hinch said that's not the one that's meaningful to him. Hinch: "Not the first one, the fourth one. I think the fourth one, that will be the one to bring home to the city." Since the start of 2012, including the playoffs, the Dodgers are 49-1 when Kershaw has a four-run lead. That mark is now in jeopardy as the Astros explode in the fourth inning, with Yuri Gurriel tying the game with a three-run rocket over the Crawford Boxes in left field. TexasAg1969 Posted November 9, 2017 Report Share Posted November 9, 2017 One of the greatest games in WS history was the Pirates walk off homer by Bill Mazeroski to win the series 4-3 over the Maris/Mantle Yankees in 1960 with that 10-9 game. The following year Maris and Mantle had their record breaking HR team winning the WS in 1961 and another in 1962. I think game 5 in the Dodgers-Astros series ranks right up there with that game. It included three Dodger leads tied up by the Astros and an Astros lead tied up in the 9th with a 3 run inning highlighted by Puig's 2 run homer. The Astros finally won it in the bottom of the 10th 13-12 on a 2 out walk off single.
