Browns/Jets Factoids

Here are factoids on the Jets/Browns. Usually done as trivia...but no time now before game:

1. The Browns lead the all time series 12-10

2. The Browns have won the only postseason game between the two teams.

3. Eric Mangini has been the HC of both the Jets and the Browns.

4. Vinny Testaverde has led both the Browns and the Jets in passing.

5. Braylon Edwards has led both the Browns and the Jets in receiving.

6. Tom Tupa and Vinny T. are the two players who had made the Pro Bowl with the Jets who also played for the Browns in their careers.

7. The Jets most common post season foe has been the Colts...Baltimore and Indy. They have played 4 times.

8. The first time they played was Super Bowl III. That 1968 season was the very first time the Jets had made post season play...and of course they went on to win it all.. The Jets, however have not been back to the Super Bowl since. They have lost in 4 AFC conference title games. (to Steelers, Colts, Broncos, Dolphins)

9. The original name of the team in the AFL was the Titans. So named by their original owner because he said that "Titans are bigger and stronger than Giants"....which was the name of the NFL rival team in NYC.

The Titans uniform colors were blue and gold....but changed when they moved out of Manhattan

10. The Titans original stadium was the Polo Grounds where they played 3 years. After 3 years they moved into the new Shea Stadium, and changed their name to the Jets because of that stadiums proximity to LaGuardia, and the fact that the stadium was in the approach path to the airport and often low flying planes would go right over the stadium.

They changed their uniform colors along with the change of stadium and name.

11. The current owner of the Jets is Woody Johnson....of the Johnson & Johnson family...the baby powder people.

12. The Jets were to have moved into a new stadium on the west side of Manhattan. In fact, this stadium was tentatively granted a Super Bowl, but other forces, including the owners of Madison Square Garden opposed this new Stadium. They thought it would hinder development of the area and brought lawsuits on environmental grounds. Bogus as the claims likely were, they worked as the financiers of the deal backed out and the Stadium was never built. Instead, now the Jets have a 50/50 partnership with the Giants in the newer MetLife Stadium.

Jets retired numbers:

12---Joe Namath

13---Don Maynard

28---Curtis Martin

73---Joe Klecko

90---Dennis Byrd
