Obama’s Grandmother Dies

By JEFF ZELENY

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Senator Barack Obama’s grandmother, a central figure in his life who helped raise him during his teen-age years, died in Hawaii on Monday morning.

Mr. Obama, who left the presidential campaign trail late last month to travel to Honolulu to bid her farewell, announced the death in a statement released by his spokesman upon landing here this afternoon. Her death comes one day shy of Election Day.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer,” Mr. Obama said in a statement. “She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances.”

Madelyn Dunham, who turned 86 on Oct. 26, was unable to travel to see her grandson on the campaign trail. But from her apartment in Honolulu, she religiously followed his bid for the presidency, tracking his movements and his progression through cable television.

Mr. Obama learned of his grandmother’s death a little after 8 a.m. in Jacksonville, Fla., where he had spent the evening, said Robert Gibbs, a senior adviser. Mr. Gibbs said that Mrs. Dunham died late Sunday evening on Hawaii Standard Time, which was between 4 and 5 a.m. on the East Coast.

“She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring,” Mr. Obama said in the statement. “Our debt to her is beyond measure.”

Mr. Obama released the statement with his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who has been at Mrs. Dunham’s side while Mr. Obama has been campaigning for president.

“Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort,” Mr. Obama said in the statement. “Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date.”

Rest in peace.

I'm sure it would have meant the world to him (and her) to see what shook out tomorrow night. My condolences.

It is always sad to read about such things but especially given the historic potential of tomorrow.

I am sure she was a fine person and know that she was a strong influence on B. O.

Nothing special, just a 'typical white person' as described by her grandson.

Way to keep it classy' date=' guys.

Oh stick it where the sun don't shine, Shep.

I remember you gloating over Bob Novak's illness and your comment about how somebody's passing can make the world just a little bit better place (Tony Snow).

Being called classless by somebody with NO class is a compliment in my book.

Nothing wrong with being 'a typical white person', is there. I'm sure it was meant as a compliment.

No shit Chic. I'm sure he will use his "typical white woman Grandma's death" to his stinking advantage.

When did Shep say either of those things?

I looked through the archives of the old site, and I didn't find anything about Bob Novak.

ballpeen started a thread about commenters on an LA Times blog writing horrible things about Snow, to which Shep posted this:

I was amazed at Snow's willingness to tell bald-faced lies over and over and over. He'd tell you the sun was shining while it rained buckets on his head. I'm not sure I'd ever seen a press dude quite as wantonly insincere in my entire life... and that's saying something.

That said, it's gross to wish suffering or death on any human being. He was a douchebag, but that's no excuse to be hateful about it. I have nothing but sadness for his early demise and the sadness of his loved ones.

Is that saying that "somebody's passing can make the world just a little better place"? No.

I think your memory did you a disservice here, perhaps aided by your intense dislike of Shep. Either way, what you wrote basically amounts to slander.

That's not the relevant comparison, John. It's between injecting nastiness in a thread about someone passing and lying about what a poster here wrote.

Those are two things that shouldn't be done by a moderator; they're also two things you've done in this thread.

John, Obama deeply, DEEPLY loved his grandma.

The reason his book was so well reviewed was his willingness to be open and candid about ALL of his feelings about being a mixed race adolescent, the good, the bad, the rash, and the regrettable. It's a fantastic book.

He recently said he didn't want to write a "political" book, he wanted to write an honest one. He's not surprised that haters are taking his very honest words and making him appear to be what everybody knows he isn't; racist and angry.

Obama is a guy who went to Harvard, not Howard, and he was raised by a white mother and white grandparents. He is not a black man insulated in a black community, and I can't believe I have to type that. This guy transcends race... and gave what is already regarded as one of the best speeches of our lifetimes ABOUT race.

This is a great guy, a great son, a great grandson, a loyal husband (who didn't cheat on his crippled wife), and a loving father. Someone very, very dear to him just died, Chic John, and you're being a horrific and hateful person about it.

Robert Novak is/was a total dick. That said, I'll bet people in his life love him and he loves them back and I would never wish pain or suffering on him. I doubt that "Toot" has said or done a minute fraction of the shitty things Novak has done... so let's show some human decency.

And whoever backed me up on the C&P, thanks. John, you need to reach down and find some dignity.

Show me what in here spews hate and lacks dignity, Mr. OMG.

If somebody is remembered as living a simple life, does that mean they are a simpleton or that they did noting grandious (sp), just did decent things and was 'good people'.

Her grandson called her 'a typical white person'. Where did I paraphrase.

You continue to want it both ways, Shep.

What was nasty about what I said? I directly quoted her loving grandson when asked about her.

You aspoles are the most intolerant, conceited, and obnoxious posters on this board and I spent a good part of last week cleaning posts in order to comply with the PM and direct requests to 'control' those who dare to disagree.

How do you spell H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E????

PS This moderator job pays shit and has absolutely no benefits other than listening to Obams humpers complain that the world at large is against them.

Funny how they don't find another place to plain, er, complain.

Dismissed.

While I am loath to get into the middle of this, I must make clear what "we" wanted censored.

It was NOT the censor of conservative posts or posters anyone desired WHATSOEVER.

It was NOT the censor of differing opinions anyone desired WHATSOEVER.

It WAS the desire to eradicate the "spam" and garbage posts, racist shit, etc. Like cal posting the familiar "bark is falling off the Barrack Hussein Osamabama Socialist Muslim terrorist baby-murdering tree" trash in threads about seasonal beers, or threads started by, say, Scott Player or T that said the same thing for the thousandth time.

I don't get it. John says Shep said something. I prove he didn't say it. And I'm suddenly an obnoxious poster?

The most annoying quality any person can have is an inability to admit when they're wrong. Like everyone, I possess some of that quality myself. But if you ask Toop, Sev, or any of the other guys I've squabbled with, they'll tell you that I'm occasionally willing to man up.

By contrast, all we've gotten in this thread is an angry backlash & complaints about how much it sucks being a moderator. Well, if it's such a burden trying to keep this board classy, then fine: we'll all put certain people on ignore and move from there.

But if it is possible for a mod to do some good here, then I imagine said moderator should serve as a good example to other posters. At least in the case of this thread, I don't see that happening.

It's too bad Obama lost his "typical white person" grandmother. Honest.

She deserved a grandson that was American enough and man enough to have honored her, instead

of dishonered her with the "typical white person" racial slur.

Osamabama is a male slut, a garbage human being that is stoic about the murder of millions of

unborn and BORN American children.

He's a racist bigot, toward even his own grandmother.

He doesn't respect America, white people, our way of life...

dissing his grandmother for being white is typical of him, say one thing, do another, say a different thing. do the same

thing that contridicts what he said before...

John is absolute right in what he said. Now we have liberals pandering for votes for Obama by wailing about

Obama's grandmother.

GET CLASSY, liberals. For ONCE>

Wow this thread went off the beaten path.

I think it is sad that his Grandmother who was his primary care giver died right before a possible monumental American history changing event. I am sure IF he wins he will have a difficult HUMAN (non partisan) moment missing his recently departed Grandmother.

John that comment you made could have been construed in two different ways. I dont know what your intent was so its not worth me entering the fray.

I do wish that as a moderator you could help prune/control some of the more offensive/ hateful spam posts. I know that is a fine line to ride but it would make the board a little less cluttered with some of the less appropriate threads. I have invited a few of my friends here and almost all of them have refused to post because of some of the more baser less substantive posts.

That is exactly what I said in my post - well, paraphrased.

Not to the Shep-les of this board. They took the worse case scenario and tripled it.

This is neither a full time nor a paying position.

Quite honestly, my best guess to get things back in order would be the shut the entire board down for a week. I might just suggest that to Stan.

The avalanch of stupid posts from both sides of the aisle makes it virtually impossible to keep things in order.
