The Best College Football States

Perhaps one of the ways to measure a state as a good college football state is to look at the number of programs that play football in that state.....at ALL levels. Here is how each state makes out"

Alabama: 4 FBS, 4 FCS, 5 D-II, 2 D-III.....15 total programs

Alaska: has no college football programs at any level.... -0- programs

ARizona: 2 FBS, 1 FCS, not a single D-II or D-II program...... 3 programs

Arkansas: 2 FBS, 2 FCS, 6 D-II, one D-II....11 programs

California: 7 FBS, 4 FCS, 2 D-II, 8 D-III.... 21 total programs

Colorado: 3 FBS, 1 FCS, 6 D-II, -0- DIII....10 total programs

Connecticut: 1 FBS, 3 FCS, 2 D-II, 4 D-III...10 total programs

Delaware: -0- FBS, 2 FCS, -0- D-II, 1 D-III...3 total programs

Dist. of Columbia: -0- FBS, 2 FCS, -0- D-II, 2 D-III...4 total programs

Florida: 7 FBS, 4 FCS, 1 D-II, not a single D-III....12 total programs

Georgia: 4 FBS, 3 FCS, 7 D-II, 2 D-III....16 total programs

Hawaii: 1 FBS, none in any other division.....1 total program

Idaho: 2 FBS, 1-DII, none on D-II or III......3 total programs

Illinois: 3 FBS, 1 FCS, 2 D-II, 19 D-III......25 total programs

Indiana: 4 FBS, 3 FCS, 2 D-II, 9 D-III......18 total programs

Iowa: 2 FBS, 2 FCS, 1 D-II, 11 D-III.......16 total programs

Kansas: 2 FBS

Well....enough typing. Bottom line the states that play and support college football the most are:

Ohio has 41 college programs.

Penn. has 53 college programs

Texas has 36

New York has 31

Mass. has 29. Good for a small state.

Florida's 12 programs....none in D-III tells me that they are not as big a football state as it may first seem.

California's 21 seems meager give that state's size. Ohio has almost twice as many.

And while TX is high on the list....they are not such the vaunted football state as it may seem.

So I give the prize on this to border states of PA and OH.
