Just a note: Of the Top 10, 4 are Pac12, 3 or 4 are ACC (if you count ND as ACC). 1 is Big Ten. 1 is ACC. None for Big 12

Of the bottom ten plus ties you have: 3 Pac12, 4 SEC, 4 Big 12, 1 ACC, none for Big Ten.

It is all or nothing for Pac 12. 4 in Top 10, 3 in bottom 10. (and if we did bottom dozen...it would be 5 in bottom 12).

And WVU bringing up the rear.

And to be fair, the US News ratings are pretty damn flawed. Not that any ranking is perfect though. These rankings are just manipulated by some schools.

To be sure, you are correct about college rankings. It is by no means an exact science.

These are pretty new.

I'm sure something is sketchy here too

Certainly could be. Where US News has Stanford #4 in the US....this has them #3 in the world. And I think it must be a British publication....as it seems that there are a lot of English schools given much higher rankings than most other polls of this sort have given them. Cambridge, Oxford, sure.

The very top British schools are always highly ranked. I believe this ranking has ND and Dartmouth around 105 too, which doesn't seem right

Also, in that ranking

Big Ten Rankings

21. Michigan

25. Northwestern

36. Illinois

50. Wisconsin

65. Minnesota

75. PSU

90. OSU

99. MSU

113. Purdue

117. Maryland

123. Rutgers

201-250. Iowa, Indiana

301-350. Nebraska

It can give you a good idea at breaking schools into tiers, but it isn't perfect.

One of the main knocks on the US News rankings is the emphasis on acceptance rate. There are ways in which schools can drive their acceptance rate artificially low to move up in the rankings. As an example, some schools send flyers to tons of high school kids. Even those with no chance of getting in. So that they can turn them away. Similarly, it is very easy to apply to all UC schools at once, even if you had no business going to Cal, UCLA, etc. These applications help them drive scores lower.

Michigan had a pretty high acceptance rate overall because if the high ratio of in state kids. Additionally, there was a lot of self selection among applicants.

Recently though, we've moved to the common app. This has been consistently driving our acceptance rates down over the past few years as more kids apply. The in state to out of state ratio is shifting too.

I have noticed Michigan seems consistently higher ranked in World Rankings than it does in the US news rankings. I've seen them as high as #15 in the world before.

Then, if you break it down by subject, they're all very high.

All Well and Good....but just remember: Michigan sucks. ;)
