We need Tom Tupa
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/03/opinion/...amp;ref=opinion Those of us who consider ourselves moderates — moderate-conservative, in my case — are forced to confront the reality that Barack Obama is not who we thought he was. His words are responsible; his character is inspiring. But his actions betray a transformational liberalism that should put every centrist on notice. As Clive Crook, an Obama admirer, wrote in The Financial Times, the Obama budget “contains no trace of compromise. It makes no gesture, however small, however costless to its larger agenda, of a bipartisan approach to the great questions it addresses. It is a liberal’s dream of a new New Deal.”
Mr. T
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/03/opinion/...amp;ref=opinion On the news last night I heard that Obama has spent more money than all presidents combined. Interesting point, Im sure some will need to do the math. But if this is the case the dollar we be devaluated when we have to turn on the printing presses. Guest Aloysius
I was watching Rachel Maddow's show a few weeks ago, and she was arguing that any government spending is stimulative, so everything in the stimulus bill was good for the economy. That's the kind of trade off-free bullshit that you get with conservative dogma on taxes. And as a liberal who has pretensions of being a sensible moderate, that's really frustrating. I'm not sure that Brooks' Tocquevillian read of America as an egalitarian, decentralized society is really accurate, but I sympathize with his concerns about Obama's budget. Should be interesting to see how this plays out politically.
Kosar_For_President
On the news last night I heard that Obama has spent more money than all presidents combined. LOL, good stuff. People's political party clouding facts? Nahhh So your telling me Bush spent less than Obama thus far? Come on. The 800 million stimulus in 08 and the 2 "wars". When I argue these points I do not affiliate with any party or try to put anyone's views by the wayside. I just try to point out that affiliation with one party could have clouded your reasoning to make a correct statement. Wow, being affiliated with ONE party, isn't that socialism? Your restricting your choices aren't you? LOL.
calfoxwc
I heard, that if Obama took ALL of the money from folks earning $250,000 or more, it would not be enough to fund even his nationalized health care plan. And, something Obama said about medical insurance companies don't want to bid on the right to do medical insurance... Means the only health insurance will be the national one, and no other plan would be allowed to exist? Then Obama is a liar in the mold of ... the mold of.... hmm. Can't think an example of such a huge liar... Our USA is in the hands of revolutionaries, and historically, they are so arrogant and dishonest, they will not let go of power now that they have it. Just a tinge of worry that Obama is an antichrist wannabe.

damajuki
Thanks for the link and the topic, Toop. I like Brooks and I like this article. As someone who would probably be a "moderate progressive" by Brooks' definition, I like the plea for moderation and for those (probably majority) of us that fall between MSNBC and FOX on the political/information spectrum to step up and assert ourselves. Obama does seem to be talking from the center and governing from the left, which is really too bad. I really had high hopes that he'd actually try to be a president that represented all views but that seems not to be the case thus far. As far the budget, I don't really know how this budget compares to previous budgets. Anyone with economic savvy know if Brooks' concern about the number is justified? Seems to me that budgets have always been ridiculously bloated recently and we know that Bush avoided the up-front number by breaking up the costs of the wars into separate spending bills so where does this budget actually fall on the spectrum?
