The Gipper
OK, so now Phil AND Colt have gone to the 49ers. But let's just hold up on giving them a ring. History shows that it is highly improbable that they will get one. Here is the fate of all Super Bowl losing teams going back to the 1970 merger. Listed first is the year, then the team that lost the SB, then their fate the following year: 1970 Cowboys WON the Super Bowl 1971 Dolphins WON the Super Bowl 1972 Redskins Lost in division round 1973 Vikings Lost the Super Bowl 1974 Vikings Lost in Division round 1975 Cowboys Lost in Division round 1976 Vikings Lost NFC title game 1977 Broncos Lost in Division round 1978 Cowboys Lost in Division round 1979 Rams Lost Wildcard round 1980 Eagles Lost Wildcard round 1981 Bengals Lost Wildcard round 1982 Dolphins Lost Division round 1983 Redskins Lost Division round 1984 Dolphins Lost AFC title game 1985 Pats Lost Division round 1986 Broncos Lost Super Bowl 1987 Broncos 8-8 no playoffs * first SB loser to fail to make playoffs 1988 Bengals 8-8 no playoffs 1989 Broncos 5-11 no playoffs 1990 Bills Lost Super Bowl 1991 Bills Lost Super Bowl 1992 Bills Lost Super Bowl 1993 Bills 7-9 no playoffs 1994 Chargers Lost Wildcard round 1995 Steeler Lost Division round 1996 Pats Lost Division round 1997 Packers Lost Wildcard 1998 Falcons 5-11 no playoffs 1999 Titans Lost Division round 2000 Giants 7-9 no playoffs 2001 Rams 7-9 no playoffs 2002 Raiders 4-12 no playoffs 2003 Panthers 7-9 no playoffs 2004 Eagles 6-10 no playoffs 2005 Seahawks Lost Division round 2006 Bears 7-9 no playoffs 2007 Pats 11-5 but no playoffs 2008 Cardinals Lost Division round 2009 Colts Lost Wildcard 2010 Steelers Lost Wildcard 2011 Patriots Lost AFC Title game 2012 49ers ?????? slowburn
Really surprised at the high probability (95% per above historical data) that the Niners won't get the ring in 2014. Current Vegas odds are 7-1 of Niners winning Super Bowl. Definite value in placing a proposition bet in Vegas against the Niners but you would have to put up $1000 or so dollars just to win $100. js
The Gipper
If you notice, the last Super Bowl loser to go on to win a Super Bowl at any later point in time is the 2000 Giants. But they waited 7 years to do that, and it was with a complete new team. New coach, new QB, probably new everything. If there were more than 1 or 2 players from that 2000 SB loser that was still on the Giants in 2007 I would be surprised. The only guys I can think of are Michael Strahan and Amani Toomer. Actually slightly less than that. Of 47 Super Bowl losers, only 2, or 4.25% went on to win the Super Bowl the following year after losing it. Edit: let me correct that. That 47 includes the 49ers whose fate is not known yet. It is 2 of 46 who went on to win the following year, or 4.34%

Let's not forget Giants benefited from the luckiest play in Super Bowl history. The famous Manning to Tyree "Helmet Catch".

The Gipper
That's not how probability works. I don't think it is probabability, it is just history. Despite the history, I think the 49ers could likely be the betting favorite to win next year's Super Bowl.
