#1 Overall Draft Pick Trivia

Recommended Posts

Here is trivia that deals with just #1 overall draft selections of the NFL (and 1 AFL question). Note, the NFL draft goes back to 1936, so be aware that a few of these question may involve some old timers. Try your best:

1. Two colleges are tied with having had the most Overall #1 picks of the NFL draft, with 5 each. Simply name those 2 schools:

2. Besides the 2 above, Six other colleges have had players Drafted with the #1 overall pick on at least 3 occasions. Name those 6 schools.

3. The Cleveland Browns have had the #1 overall pick in the regular NFL draft on 3 occasions. Simply name the 3 players they have taken with those picks.

4. The Pittsburgh Steelers have had the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft on 3 occasions. Simply name the 3 players the Steelers have taken with those picks.

5. The Cincinnati Bengals have had the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft on 3 occasions. Simply name the 3 players the Bengals have taken with those picks.

6. Multi-parter: A. On one occasion the #1 overall pick of the NFL draft did not sign with the NFL team that picked him, but signed with an AFL team. Name that player:

B. On one occasion the #1 overall pick of the NFL draft did not sign with the NFL team that picked him, but signed with a CFL team. Name that player:

C. On one occasion the #1 overall pick of the NFL draft did not sign with the NFL team that picked him, but waited a full year and re-entered the draft the following year. Name that player.

D. On one occasion the #1 overall pick of the NFL draft did not sign with the NFL team that picked him, and in fact never signed with anyone and never played pro football. Name that player.

(note, the players in A,B, and C all ended up playing pro football)

7. Three #1 overall picks were traded by the teams that drafted them before ever suiting up for that team. Name those 3 players.

8. On two occasions the original overall #1 position in the regular NFL draft was forfeited because those teams selected players in a Supplemental Draft. Name the 2 players taken in these supplemental draft that caused these forfeitures:

9. Of the 72 players selected with the Overall #1 pick of the draft, only 4 have ever gone on to be named the NFL Offensive or Defensive Rookie of the Year. Name those 4 players. (Hint: they were all on offense, none on defense)

10. From 1962 to 1966 the AFL held a draft similar to the NFL in which teams had the right to pick players in order. (in 1960 and 1961 the draft was held as a "regional draft", thus say, the Houston Oilers would have held the rights to any player that played college ball in Texas etc).

Thus, you can say that the AFL, in its draft history had 5 Overall #1 draft picks.

Simply name as many of those 5 as you can. (note, not all of them necessarily ended up playing in the NFL)

Bonus: As you know there is a Mr. Irrelevent, i.e. the LAST player chosen in the NFL draft. There happens to be, in history, one person who holds the title of Mr. Irrelevent in that he was the last player chosen in the NFL draft.....but he also holds the distinction of being the #1 overall selection of the NBA draft. Name that player. (hint: needless to say, he chose the NBA as his profession, not the NFL)

Here is a question I heard this morning: Who is the only player in history to do all of this in the same "academic" year:

Win the Heisman Trophy

Win the National Championship

Be the #1 overall pick in the draft?

If Cam Newton is the #1 overall pick he will be the 2d person to accomplish that feat. Who was the first.

I thought two Notre Damers did it: Hart and Bertelli. Maybe one of them didn't do it in an "academic year" because the war.

It was Hart, but yes, a few others did do it, but not all in the same year, e.g.: OJ Simpson and Billy Sims

As a bonus in this thread I will give you this factoid....I won't even make you guess.

The three players selected by the Browns at #1 overall are NOT the only overall #1 draft pick a Cleveland team has selected.

In the 1938 NFL draft the Cleveland Rams selected Corbett Davis #1 overall in the NFL draft.

Corbett Davis played for 4 years with the Rams, but then enlisted and served in the military during WWII. After the war he became a publisher and a Big Ten football Official. In 1968 he was in Maine on a fishing trip when he fell out of a boat, ruptured his spleen and died.

While you are working on this trivia, here is another free factoid for you about the #1 overall picks of the NFL (not AFL) draft. Since 1936 the number of first overall picks who played each position:

Quarterback 27

Running back 22 (but no RB has been taken #1 since Ki-Jana Carter in 1995, while 10 QBs have been taken #1 since then)

Defensive end 9

Wide Receiver 5

Linebacker 4

Defensive Tackle 3

Offensive Tackle 3

Defensive Back 1 (Gary Glick in 1956)

Center 1 (Ki Aldrich in 1939, though Chuck Bednarik was a LB/C)

Off. Guard 0

As a hint to one of the questions, note that of the 5 AFL top picks, 3 were QBs, 1 WR and one DE.
