Tom Coughlin, New York Giants: Formerly coached Jaguars and Boston College. took Jags job in 95. Best record 14-2 with Jacksonville. Lost two AFC championship games. Made four trips to playoffs with Jacksonville and never went to Superbowl. Took Giants job in 2004. Made playoff with Giants in 2005 and 2006 but lost first game each time. Won superbowl after 2007 season. Years Head Coach before superbowl Victory: 12 Years with Superbowl winning Team before Superbowl Victory: 3 Years before playoff appearance as head coach: 1 Tony Dungy, Indianapolis Colts: Formerly coached Tampa Bay. Years Head Coach before superbowl Victory: 0 Years with Superbowl winning Team before Superbowl Victory: 0 Years before playoff appearance as head coach: 0 Bill Parcels, Giants Giants was first coaching gig. took over in '83 took Giants to playoffs in '84 and '85 before winning it all after '86 season. Years Head Coach before superbowl Victory: 3 Years with Superbowl winning Team before Superbowl Victory: 3 Years before playoff appearance as head coach: 1 Moral of the story: Superbowl winning coaches have their teams in the playoffs by at least their fourth year as head coach, even if it's their first head coaching job. They win the superbowl withing 4 years of taking over the team they win it with. Few first time head coaches have won recent superbowls. Billick, Cowher, Parcells, and Holmgren are it. Marty had his first team the Browns in the playoffs quick. Maybe Jim Fassel wouldn't be bad. he had the Giants in the playoffs in his second season. I think he will be fired this season too, but he did take seattle to the playoffs before and he too has a score to settle with the Steelers Hard to get fired when you already announced you were done coaching after this year and SEA already put his successor, Mora, in place.
